help with adobe flash player installation

I have windows vista. i have successfully installed adobe flash player (or so the website says) but it won't work.  I see it in my list of installed programs.  i currently have all firewalls and security stopped. i even uninstalled adobe and re installed it. i am a computer novice. help!
