Placing a Flash .swf file in Muse: Partial success. Help?

    darling67 Community Member

      Hello, everyone!

I am beginning my very first web site project with Muse. So far, so good....

However, I plan on part of my site to contain some Flash .swf files. Figured I'd test it out to see how Muse handles Flash files containing action script... and so I "placed" a .swf and previewed the Muse page.

The Flash "mini site" that I placed functioned pretty well—sound worked, navigation button functioned properly, etc. However, some images and video files within the Flash mini site were nowhere to be found. I am assuming there is a broken path to these assets? Somehow, they are not being found?

Can someone give me some direction on what I need to do? Anyone else run into a similar situation?

      Thanks so much!

Well, ok... I guess not. LOL!

I'll never understand why files, specifically created for the web in other programs, get all wonky when brought into a new web environment. These things should work more seamlessly—especially when all the assets are present and accounted for in the new environment.

Anyone who can help... much appreciated!

There's a fair bit of discussion of this topic in http://forums.adobe.com/message/4635231#4635231.

In general you have to manually create the file/folder structure the SWF expects in the hosting environment. There's no way for Muse to know what files the SWF depends upon, if any, and where they need to be located.

A SWF that has external dependencies will never work in Muse Preview or Muse Preview in Browser, but can be made to work on a published/uploaded site by manually using an FTP client to create the file/folder structure the SWF requires.

              Hi, Zak!

So, I've spent the day trying to get my Muse site to upload to my ftp. I first tried using the Adobe hosting approach (can't recall the exact name of it), and that worked ok, but I decided to simply re-make my Yahoo! site—since I am paying for the domain every year!

Within my Muse site, some of my Flash files work fine, others not so great. Seems the files with action scripting in them are the most problematic. Problem I began with is that I am re-uploading my assets to my ftp... going from my Flash/html-based site to Muse. Because Flash wants EVERYTHING to be EXACTLY where it's always been from my "old" site's hierarchy, and Muse is uploading these same files via it's "Assets" list within my Muse site, well....... it's getting a bit crazy.

Can you suggest a sure-fire way to upload my site's files (my Flash files in particular)? Should I just use Fetch - as I always have -  to upload all my site's files, and bypass Muse's upload to ftp options? I thought that I'd be working smart by using Muse's ftp upload menu option.... but Flash is SO tempermental, it doesn't like where Muse puts things. Ugh!

              Thanks!!!

Added later: I was able to trouble-shoot some of my issues. When I uploaded files to my ftp thru Muse, Muse changed some titles from upperAndLowerCase to alllowercase! Xml sheets wanted correct spelling! Arghhh!!!!! So, I was able to fix some things.

However, there are actions (interactive portions of my Flash mini sites placed in my Muse site) that all work great as .swf files... but are not working on my live Muse site. Puzzling to say the least. I've got my assets in folders where Flash will look for them.

Also, some .flv and .f4v files will not load on my Muse site... whereas they loaded like charms in my old html site. The "skin" appears, but no videos!
