karen schneider Sep 18, 2012 1:15 PM (in response to PhotoRoy5)The basic differences are that Field blur replicates the way a camera lens would "blur" your image (actually, it places an area out of focus), and Field blur has tools to help accentuate how the lens captures the reflective light. Gaussian blur is more of an overall blurring or softening of all the pixels.
The example below shows Field blur making specular highlights from the white areas, and Gaussian blur making all the pixels equally soft.
