My Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 keeps on crashing, giving me the message "Adobe Premiere Pro Not Responding." I've tried cutting, pasting, and relinking my clips, which isn’t working. I seem to be having trouble keeping other projects open as well. I've got plenty of space on my C drive, as well as the external drive that the project is on. (My Recovery drive has only 1.15 GB out of 14 GB free, but I heard it's normal for that to be full.)
I looked on another forum, which said the problem might also be electricity. I am in China right now so the voltage is different, but the program worked with my laptop and power cord for quite a while before it started quitting on me. (Also, I have tried opening Premier projects just working off the battery and they still crashed.)
Any suggestions?
Disregarding that recovery drive, please give us the full specs. of you computer, including the other HDD's. The more detail, the better.
Then, list your Project/Sequence settings and your Source Footage.
Good luck,

1st, CS4 and Win7 "sometimes" means you must right click the PPro (and Encore) icon and set the program to run in WinXP compatibility mode
2nd, have you installed any Adobe updates?
All Adobe updates start here and select product, read to see if you need to install updates in number order, or if the updates are cumulative for the individual product http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
For CS4 you must update the Roxio component http://forums.adobe.com/thread/400484
More on Encore and Roxio http://forums.adobe.com/thread/528582 or direct to
http://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/kb/General%20Information/000070GN&PARAMS
.
Also, right click the PPro/Encore icon and select Run as Administrator, which is NOT the same thing as running the computer with the Administrator account, and which fixes several "odd" problems... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395
.
Also, a general comment that Win7 64bit and only 4Gig of ram is barely giving any ram for program use... is there any way to increase the ram?

I ran Windows 7 in XP compatibility mode and ran Premiere Pro as administrator, and it worked like a charm! Thank you so much. Once I get back in the states I'll update the programs (though I don't think there is any current update for Premiere Pro CS4), as well as update from 4 GB of RAM to 8 or 16. Much gratitude for the help!

Excellent news!
If that DID fix things for you, you might want to look over this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1058744?tstart=0
I see that you have already done part of that with the "Helpful" mark for John T's Reply.
Good luck,

PPro CS4 is up to version 4.2.1 - which is a FREE download (if your Internet connection is fast enough)

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would clarify something. Adobe Premire, After Effects, Illustrator, and Flash are all 32-bit applications, meaning you could install 32GB of RAM and it wouldn't help you a bit! I'm still running CS4 (yes, in 2015 ) and just have to tweak other parts of my laptop to improve performance (SSD, Faster RAM instead of more, and an external USB 3.0 flash drive for exports and previews). I know it's not the best setup but to edit DV or 720p, you would do alright. I'm working with 1080p and it's a bit slow but it does work.
Here's a great quote I grabbed from TomsHardware.com that pretty much sums it up:
"32-bit programs can only address a maximum of 4GB of memory in a 64-bit OS (they can only access 2 or 3GB of memory in a 32-bit OS). So a single 32-bit program won't be able to use all of your 6GB of memory.
But you will be able to, for example, run five 1GB programs at once and have them all fit into memory. And even if you're not running that many programs the extra memory will still be used for file caching."
Meaning if you have 6 to 8 Gigabytes of RAM you'll pretty much maxed out when it comes to memory for any of the Adobe CS4 programs (except for Photoshop because CS4 does include a 64-bit version of it, but not many people using CS4 will come anywhere close to using that much RAM in Photoshop, so that doesn't help much). CS5 is the first Creative Suite that includes 64-bit versions of Premiere and After Effects, trust me I double checked .
Thanks for the tips about running as administrator and in compatibility mode. I didn't think they would make a difference but those are two things I haven't tried and I am having issues with Premiere force closing!
Here is an fantastic video series I found that should help many Premiere and After Effects users suffering from bad performance (or anyone else who wants to make sure they've tried every tweak to make AE & Premiere run smooth). They show you how to optimize your workflow, software, and OS for maximum performance. I'm a veteran Windows user and still picked up several tricks and a few that I forgot about by watching this.
