Master Style page changing/deleting images

Hi all -

This has been a reoccurring problem for quite some time. I have several master style pages in my project; each one is laid out the same with my company's logo and a module name in a header, then a copyright in the footer. While working, I'll get a prompt that says the master style has changed and needs to be reapplied to all the connected pages. This would be self-explanatory if I were editing the headers/footers while working -- But I'm not. Only the page content.

It's always my company's logo that disappears from the header when this happens. This is the prompt I get:

Master Page Prompt.png

This happens no matter what master style the page I'm working on might have.

(It just happened now and I didn't change anything in the headers or footers.)

Please help.

Thanks!

Erin

It is a well known bug that has been fixed in RoboHelp 10.

If you choose the first option, you will then have to go and fix whatever RoboHelp has broken in the master page.

If you choose the second option, you have to reassociate the master page manually. Oh, and you will get the message again later.

I found it happens when topics are moved within Project Manager but I don't think that is the only cause.

I have RoboHelp 10 (fresh install, no upgrade) and I have this same problem. If I edit certain parts of the topic (table settings, for example), I get that same warning box, and when I select the first option, I lose the company logo from the master page.

So, Adobe may have said that they fixed this bug, but it looks like they didn't.

  1. Create a topic page.
  2. Create a master page, including a corporate logo graphic.
  3. Apply the master page to the topic page using the topic's Properties > General tab
  4. In the Design view of the topic, the master page elements are visible but grayed-out.

wtf-master.gif

  1. Switch to HTML editing on the topic page.
  2. Inside a TD tag, type "padding-right: 6pt;"
  3. Press Ctrl+S. The same Headers and Footers dialog as shown in the first post on this thread is displayed.
  4. Select the top option and click OK.
  5. Switch to Design view. The graphic in the master page has been replaced by a small box and a cable drum.

wtf-master1.gif

  1. In the HTML code, the path/filename for the graphic still exists, but the graphic in the Project Manager panel now has a red X next to it.
  2. In Design view, replace the graphic. It asks whether to overwrite the original.

Not to be a huge pill, but the text inside the blank Master page is somewhat confusing:

This is Body Placeholder text for your Master Page. Topics created using this Master Page will get this text by default. Replace text of this Body Placeholder with your default content for topics.

Area outside this Body Placeholder represents the layout of the Master Page which will not be shown in the associated topics but will be present in the output. The Body Placeholder content will be replaced by actual topic content in the output.

Use Master Page to define the layout of your topic in the output.

It took me awhile to understand that the topics would appear, in toto, inside the Body Placeholder, and that footers and headers and breadcrumbs should be configured outside of the Body Placeholder. I suggest the following:

This box is the Body Placeholder, where the content from the Topic will appear. Delete all of this default text before you apply this master page to a Topic. You may include default text of your own or leave the Body Placeholder blank.

Outside this Body Placeholder, you can include such elements as corporate logos, background images, and placeholders: bread crumbs, Topic TOCs, user-defined variables, and headers and footers.

All elements that are outside of the Body Placeholder will be visible but grayed-out on the Topic Design pages. To see how the Topic page looks with the Master Page, preview the Topic or view the Topic in the generated output.

Hi there

It's all well and good to have your say here. But it really doesn't do anything to assist with future RoboHelp development. Sure, the development team visits here from time to time, but they don't wait with bated breath looking for suggestions like this.

What would be much more helpful would be for you to submit the same thing via the Wish Form/Bug Report. Because those actually end up in their database. The more folks that report the same bug or ask for the same feature, the higher the priority it gets. (Link to the form is in my sig)

Cheers... Rick

Yes, well, three years ago, while I was using RoboHelp 7, I added the ability to format the glossary entries into the wishlist, and it's not been done yet.

In fact, except for the output formats, I can see little difference between RoboHelp 7 and RoboHelp 10. The interface is identical, as if Adobe were not terribly interested in maintaining RoboHelp beyond the bare minimum.

All stoked and nowhere to go.

I will follow the steps set out as soon as I can but meantime I have to disagree with your assertion that little has changed. Take a look at the RoboHelp Tour on my site that lists the new features and changes in each version.

Try as may, I cannot break it following your steps. The dialog does not appear and the image remains rock solid.

When you insert the image, are you first going to View > Header and then inserting the image into that? I think you are but want to be sure.

I used a gif image for convenience but I don't think that should have any impact.

I assume your project is on your local drive.

@Peter - I was reviewing the thread and I think I see what is happening here. (But I could be totally wrong. Only BonnieM can say for sure.)

My guess is that when you tested, you made an edit to the HTML in the body bit. And that shouldn't trigger any change indication as you didn't change anything related to the Header or Footer. But if BonnieM is changing the HTML code that exists within the Header or Footer area, I could easily see that triggering the message.

It's still unclear to me as to why the image is being removed.

@BonnieM - Are you by chance also using the Resource Manager to manipulate or coordinate the company logo? One thought was that if you are, perhaps something about the checking/updating process with the Resource Manager is causing an issue.

Additionally, WRT your earlier comments about the WishList and formatting Glossary entries. I know you said you added something about it and *STILL* to this day it doesn't exist. All I can say is that I understand the frustration. But we have to keep in mind that Adobe is swamped with requests and their goal is to prioritize them. So maybe they received three requests for what you asked for WRT the glossary. But the also received 5,000 requests for another different issue. Guess where the development will be headed?

So completing the form gets the issue on the radar. But if you see a hummingbird signature on the radar along with a cold front producing a storm, you will always pay more attention to the storm than the hummingbird, no?

Cheers all... Rick

Except that BonnieM refers to editing a TD tag and in the simple master page created there is no table.

Glossary text can be formatted in the Style Pod. Is that not the requirement?

My guess is that BonnieM created a Table in the Header area of the Master Page and probably omitted that step.

Indeed, there is a table in the Master page header, and the graphic goes in that table.

However, the edit to the TD tag was in a topic to which the Master was applied, not to the Master itself. IIRC, when editing a topic, you cannot edit the master page that is associated with it.

<i>Are you by chance also using the Resource Manager to manipulate or coordinate the company logo? One thought was that if you are, perhaps something about the checking/updating process with the Resource Manager is causing an issue.</i>

I'm not using the Resource Manager. The image is fully cropped and edited in PNG format before I place it, using the little picture icon. It then shows up in the Project Manager.

<i>But if you see a hummingbird signature on the radar along with a cold front producing a storm, you will always pay more attention to the storm than the hummingbird, no?</i>

I'd be so fascinated with the hummingbird I'd stay out in the rain to watch it. But that's just me.

Glossary text can be formatted in the Style Pod. Is that not the requirement?

I cannot bold or italicize glossary entries at a character level.

Just for fun, here's the Master Page code (company name replaced with [company]:

Well, yes and no.

When you create a topic that is based on the Master Page, what is in the Body Placeholder of the Master Page is copied into the topic and at that point any changes to the Master Page as far as what is inside the Body Placeholder will NOT be reflected in topics created from the Master Page. So in this case it's like feeding a form into a copier. You create copies of the form, but changing the form later has no effect on the copies. But NEW copies made of the form *WILL* have the changed information.

However, you can create a Master Page that is only used for Headers and Footers and associate that Master Page with as many topics as you like. And changes to the Header and/or Footer *WILL* populate across all topics using the Master Page. You may also double-click the Header and/or Footer area of these topics and directly edit the content in the Header or Footer area. And at the point where you save the topic, RoboHelp issues that message you are seeing and asks what you want to do. One choice says to disassociate this single topic from the Master Page and keep the changes. The other choice says to update the Master Page so that all other topics using the Master Page also reflect the changes.

So as you can see, you actually *CAN* edit the Headers and Footers of Master Pages directly from topics that are associated with them.

Cheers... Rick

When you insert the image, are you first going to View > Header and then inserting the image into that? I think you are but want to be sure.

I'm in Design View for the master page, and I am viewing the header. Then I use the picture icon to place the PNG graphic.

I assume your project is on your local drive.

It is, but I thought that RoboHelp 10 worked and played well with networks.

Playing well and playing "better" are two different things. RoboHelp plays "better", not well.

Maybe projects won't corrupt as easily. Not sure. I'm sure you will still see slowness. Only time will tell.

@BonnieM

You say you are looking at the header of the master page but you also say there is a table. I cannot see that it should make any difference but have you tried a master page where you go to View > Header and just insert the image, no table? Try it in a new master page.

Resources being on the network and RoboHelp being on the network are two different things. The remote image should be copied to your project. Could it be that you are linking direct to the image in the network folder?

As far as RoboHelp 10 projects  being on a network is concerned, yes it will be a bit slower but I understand Flare users report the same, there is going to be some latency on a network. Other than that in some simple tests I found everything worked but it is going to be network dependent.

I think I've found the problem, but I'm not sure why it's a problem.

I have two master pages: default_master.htt and ref_guide.htt. They LOOK identical, except that in default_master.htt, the master page elements are inside the Master Page Header and Footer, whereas in ref_guide.htt those same elements are merely outside the body placeholder.

I've got a topic called filters.htm that consists only of an H1 heading.

When I apply default_master.htt to that topic, in Design View it looks like this (notice the missing graphic at the right):

default_master-04.png

When I apply ref_guide.htt, Design View looks like this:

default_master-05.png

When I edit filters.htm with default_master.htt applied, I get the warning and the logo disappears. When I edit filters.htm with ref_guide.htt applied, nothing happens, and the logo stays put (the exact same PNG file, BTW).

So it appears that the problem lies with putting ANY master page elements inside the Header and Footer. (I did some experimentation with ref_guide.htt, wherein I inserted text into just the footer placeholder, and I got the warning, but the PNG [which was still not in a placeholder] remained intact).

The obvious solution for me is to not use Header and Footer in a Master Page. What I want to know is whether this is working around a bug or is it doing it properly, the way the Adobe gods intended.

Hello again, BonnieM

It's really anyone's guess as to whether things are working the way the "Adobe gods intended". (love that bit)

I've long known about and regularly use what I refer to as "the no man's land" area between the Body Placeholder and the Header or Footer area proper. But I have no clue if I'm exploiting a possible "feature" that will someday be eliminated by virtue of an update or if it's something that was intended all along.

Only Adobe knows for sure.

Glad you found something that finally makes some sense and brings some logic to the situation. Good sleuthing!

Cheers... Rick

Humour me. Create a new master page and go to View > Header with the master page open in the Design Editor. Add a graphic with no table or anything else. Now create a new topic and attach that master page. Close the project and reopen it. Edit the topic in any way you like but don't touch the master page.

Still see the warning?

I followed those exact steps: fresh Master Page with one graphic in the header space, fresh Topic, apply fresh Master. Closed RH (just to be sure), reopened. Edited topic in HTML view. Saved.

No warning page, and the graphic was not affected.

Just to see what would happen, I returned to the Master, deleted the graphic, and after selecting View > Header, I inserted a 1-row, 2-column table and re-inserted the same graphic.

Saved the master. Did not close the project. Returned to the topic and edited it. Saved.

No warning page, no effect on the graphic.

AND THEN!

I went upthread and copied the old Master code and stuck it in the fresh master page and saved it.

Then edited and saved the topic.

No warning this time, but the graphic?

Gone.

If anyone is so inclined, they can debug the code I posted earlier, but blamed if I have the skillz to do it.

I agree it sounds like something was wrong with the first master page as there have been no other reports of this bug recurring since Rh10. Glad that it is working for you now.
