If you just want to clear the list, but have it rebuild ad new files are opened, one easy way is to delete the InDesign SavedData file from your prefs set. See Replace Your Preferences

You won't lose the other preference settings it you delete only the InDesign SavedData file. If you're worried, make copies of both SavedData and InDesign Defaults so you can replace them.

All you have to do is go into the File Handling, change the display to 0, click OK, then reopen File Handling and change the display back to whatever it was and then click ok.
