Are you on a Mac or PC?

ProRez is Mac only and only available when you install Motion or Final Cut Pro.

I can playback the Prores codec just fine on my PC After Effects .
And here is the way to encode to Prores on the PC as well.

To quote Johnny Carson, "I did not know that."
I do believe on the Mac, though I may be wrong, the only way to get Pro Rex is to install Final Cut or Motion.

You are correct, Final Cut or Motion is necessary to encode on the Mac.

ProRes 422 for playback is included in Quicktime on both platforms, ProRes 444 to my knowledge is not supported on Windows at all. For encoding 422 you need one of Apple's edit programs or indeed need to hack it using ffmpeg et al or a commercial Quicktime component that is/ used to be available from some company.

try this encoder for Windows, it is fairly new, but looks promising. It is free.

Its just the same as all the others. Its a GUI slapped on top of FFMBC code. Files that are created have been problematic to many folks. There really is no reliable solution for PC users that want to convert to Prores.

I had only tried a quick test and it seemed to work.
However, I notice on the frame rate spinner, it is integer and not float.
So you can only enter 29,30, 24, as opposed to 29.976 etc.
I have emailed the author in this regard. Also I have yet to test the PC created prores
on our Mac.
At least this one has a GUI, I gave up on POVRAY 20 years ago!

for anyone looking this up in the future,
it seems that it's true that you can't download Apple ProRes codec without those programs
i installed the trial version of Final Cut Pro and was able to download the codec and now it works in After Effects.

Just wondering have there been an updates on rendering ProRes on Windows?
Is the FFMPEG-Prores-Encoder and 3rd party software such as Cinemartin CINEC the only options to render ProRes using After Effects or Media Encoder on Windows?
