1. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
John T Smith Oct 8, 2012 9:44 PM (in response to lchapman66)Exactly what is inside the files?
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
.
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

.

2. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
lchapman66 Oct 9, 2012 3:28 AM (in response to John T Smith)Using Gspot, the codec is dvsd. Dirt simple 29.97 720x480 DV Type 1.0
Again, the files that won't import into CS6 work fine in CS5.5 and Windows Media Player.

stefenluo Oct 9, 2012 4:10 AM (in response to lchapman66)I suggest you use some video converter to convert avi to proper format for Premiere 6.0.3

4. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
Ann Bens Oct 9, 2012 4:26 AM (in response to lchapman66)CS6 supports dv avi type 1
I do not know why you cannot import.
This converter converts to type 2.

5. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
lchapman66 Oct 9, 2012 8:15 AM (in response to lchapman66)The files that won't import into CS6 also import fine in CS5.
Not sure I made this clear before....it's not all the avi that fail, just some.
Output from Gspot doesn't show me any differences beyond length.

6. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
lchapman66 Oct 9, 2012 9:20 AM (in response to lchapman66)More data, and this might be a big clue.
Process: Open CS5.5 project with CS6. CS6 tells me the project is from a previous version. I give the project a new name and carry on. As explained before, many of the avi files that were fine in the CS5.5 project now fail to import, but they do show-up in the project panel as offline. Here's the differentiator....
All the avi files that failed to import show-up in the project panel with a non-zero "Video In Point".

7. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
JSS1138 Oct 9, 2012 5:11 PM (in response to lchapman66)The Video In Point is just where you have set an In marker in the Source Monitor. This alone should not be an issue.

8. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
lchapman66 Oct 10, 2012 10:12 AM (in response to lchapman66)The responses so far seem to validate my current hypothosis: Defect in Premere CS6?

9. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
JSS1138 Oct 10, 2012 12:09 PM (in response to lchapman66)Probably not, else a LOT of other folks would be here with the same issue. More likely defect with your installation. Have you tried reinstalling yet?

lchapman66 Oct 10, 2012 12:52 PM (in response to JSS1138)I tried it on my laptop. Same issue.

JSS1138 Oct 10, 2012 12:53 PM (in response to lchapman66)Weird.
If the material is OK to share, I'd be happy to take a look at a clip.

13. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
rchev Oct 11, 2012 4:55 AM (in response to lchapman66)Exactly the same problem. Some files work, other not.
All those files work great with premiere cs5.5.
Those .avi were generated by a sony z7 on a compact flash card.
It seems that the files that did not work were the biggest.

14. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
lchapman66 Oct 11, 2012 6:04 AM (in response to rchev)Yes! All the files came from a Sony HVR-MRC1K. That is same unit that docks with the Z7U. I was using it with a Sony VX2100 in this case. The smaller files (<500Mb?) do import into CS6.

15. Re: avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6
oxforduniversity Oct 25, 2012 5:01 PM (in response to Ann Bens)I am using Aunsoft tod converter. Converting tod files to avi or do you know the best for highest quality file format to convert from a tod file without losing generation loss so that I import into Premiere CS5 & CS6? Isn't AVI the highest format? If so, it won't import into CS5. Aunsof tod convertor does not have dv avi type 2 format, only avi.
Also P2 cards, what is the highest format without lossing generation loss that will import into CS4, CS5, and CS6? What is an easy highest quality format that imports into CS4, CS5 and CS6?
There is an easy format a tod file can be converted from tod, which is m2ts file as it imports no problem but I have no idea if it is less quality or not.
Anyway, appreciate your help if you know.
