1. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Sudarshan Thiagarajan Oct 14, 2012 8:20 AM (in response to Page D)What Scanner are you using and are your drivers up to date?

Hudechrome Oct 14, 2012 8:41 AM (in response to Page D)What scanner, what OS etc. Some scanners do not have an update to their software allowing them to run in Win 7 64. And they do not intend to change that. (Epson 3200, for instance. I maintain a dual boot to XP to be able to use the scanner)

Curt Y Oct 14, 2012 8:49 AM (in response to Page D)Have you gone to the manufacturors web site and downloaded the latest scanner driver?

4. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Page D Oct 14, 2012 9:54 AM (in response to Curt Y)Thanks Sudarshan Thiagarajan, Hudechrome and Curt Y. The printer/scanner/copier is an old Brother DCP-115C. I do have the latest driver installed. Due to its age, Brother stopped updating the driver ages ago.
Unless I'm missing something, why would anyone suspect the driver being at fault, anyway? The scanner worked fine from within Elements 8 - until I installed Photoshop CS6, from which point it continues to scan fine from within CS6, using either the WIA or the TWAIN systems (I needed to download the TWAIN plug-in for CS6 - it is no longer contained on Photoshop CS6's installation disc), but I can no longer scan from within Elements 8 anymore.
I'm just wondering, is one particular Photoshop application set as the 'default' application for the scanner (and, since CS6 was installed, this has taken precedence over Elements 8), or are you supposed to be able to use the scanner from within more than one Photoshop application on your PC system, at any one time, provided, of course, you have only one Photoshop application open? I expect it is the latter, as I am able to print from either Photoshop application still. As this is the case, I assume this means you should be able to scan from either Photoshop application also.

5. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Curt Y Oct 14, 2012 10:02 AM (in response to Page D)If you are using CS6 in 64 bit mode there is no TWAIN driver, they do not exist. You have to use a 32 bit mode TWAIN.
Drivers are very complex and whenever problems arise they are usually at the center of it. After you installed CS6 it may have taken over as the default application for the scanner. You might be able to reset that to Elements 8. Probably get instructions on how to do this with web search.
Are you using CS6 in 64 bit mode? That is the default. Probably PE 8 is 32 bit, and for sure scanner 32 bit.

6. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Sudarshan Thiagarajan Oct 14, 2012 10:28 AM (in response to Page D)You have 2 options:
- Run Photoshop CS6 in 32-bit mode
- Get VueScan from here: http://www.hamrick.com/ - It works great on 64-bit applications, providing complete support for all 32-bit TWAIN driver related hardware

7. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Hudechrome Oct 14, 2012 11:00 AM (in response to Sudarshan Thiagarajan)For the Epson, running in 32 bit mode or even in XP emulation did not work. Hamrick is a useful solution but depends (or did) on profiles derived from film to setup. But you don't have much choice. If you are using a desktop and have an extra hard drive, I would recommend you look into dual boot for using the scanner in XP.

R_Kelly Oct 14, 2012 11:32 AM (in response to Page D)Does the scanner work in photoshop elements 8 if in the photoshop elements 8 editor you go to File>Import?

9. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Page D Oct 15, 2012 2:36 AM (in response to Sudarshan Thiagarajan)I have always run Photoshop CS6 in 32-bit mode, Sudarshan. Please see my reply (comment #10) from R_Kelly (comment #8) - just found out it scans without a problem from within the Elements 8 Editor. Don't know if that establishes anything about why it refuses to scan from within Elements 8 Organizer (like it used to), but at least I can use the scanner from within Elements 8 Editor!

10. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Page D Oct 14, 2012 12:07 PM (in response to R_Kelly)Well, what do you know!
Yes, R_Kelly, it DOES scan without a problem, from within Elements 8 Editor. Can we conclude anything from that?
Thanks for your suggestion. As least I can scan with Elements 8, albeit using the Editor only. I always used to scan from within the Organizer but it makes no difference if I scan from within the Editor, I suppose. Well done!
I would still like to find out why it refuses to scan from within Elements 8 Organizer, though. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

11. Re: Since installing Photoshop CS6, scanner cannot be launched via Photoshop Elements 8
Page D Oct 15, 2012 7:28 AM (in response to Page D)I've sorted it, people!
In Elements 8 Preferences, under Scanner, the selected Scanner was set to 'Brother DCP-115C USB' (like it always has been). By selecting 'TW Brother DCP-115C USB' (for the TWAIN system) instead, then re-selecting 'Brother DCP-115C USB' once again (for the WIA system), it now scans fine from Elements 8 Organizer, Elements 8 Editor, and Photoshop CS6.
By the way, when Elements 8 Scanner Preferences was set to use the TWAIN system with the Brother Scanner, it scanned using TWAIN as you would expect it to, also.
It seems that installing CS6 has, somehow, upset the scanner configuration from within Elements 8 (even though the Elements 8 Scanner Preferences was set correctly), but this simple procedure of selecting another scanner option, then selecting back to the original setting again, appears to have cured it.
Thanks, everyone, for your help.
