1. Re: Minus Front won't work over pie chart
Larry G. Schneider Oct 16, 2012 11:48 AM (in response to agentpuddles007)You will have to expand the chart before using Minus Front and will then lose the ability to change the data and have the chart updated.

agentpuddles007 Oct 16, 2012 12:08 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)Thanks for the comment. Nothing happened when I pushed "expand" ...

3. Re: Minus Front won't work over pie chart
agentpuddles007 Oct 16, 2012 12:19 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)I finally "flattened transparency" which looks promising, but it might cause some quality loss. I think it's finally letting me minus front though.
Edit: That (flatten transparency) did work. And I am still able to edit individual colors, etc. Still seems to be an editable vector!

Saurabh Manocha Oct 16, 2012 12:49 PM (in response to agentpuddles007)You can use Ungroup command to convert a graph into regular objects.

5. Re: Minus Front won't work over pie chart
Larry G. Schneider Oct 16, 2012 12:52 PM (in response to agentpuddles007)The ungroup will also turn the graph into editable objects. In order to do the minus front you will need to copy the path to the clipboard and use Cmd(Crtl)-F to paste a new copy of the front object into place and select each piece of the pie to do the subtraction.

7. Re: Minus Front won't work over pie chart
Steve Fairbairn Oct 16, 2012 5:22 PM (in response to agentpuddles007)If you want to keep the data editable you can change a pie into a doughnut by using a compound clipping mask.
Draw your pie.
Draw a circle that surrounds the pie.
Draw another circle for the "hole".
Now select the 2 circles and make a compound of them.
Select the compound and the pie and Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
Now you’ve got an editable doughnut :-)
Here’s the result:
You can select the graph (to alter data without having to release the mask) by clicking twice with the Direct Select tool on a graph element.
Note that in this case all labels will have to be inserted manually.
You will get into trouble if you try to apply 3D effects to graphs that include text.

Steve Fairbairn Oct 17, 2012 8:20 AM (in response to agentpuddles007)May I draw your attention to post #7.
Strange that no-one else seems to have suggested the compound mask solution.
Expanding and ungrouping is quite unnecessary.
Pathfinder Minus Front is definitely not the way to go here.

Monika Gause Oct 17, 2012 8:48 AM (in response to Steve Fairbairn)If you've got lots of this stuff you could also give the font FF Chartwell a try:
http://tktype.com/chartwell.php
It creates some nice and clean diagrams.
