          • Enable PDFMakerOfficeAddin from the Microsoft Office application's Disabled Items list.

          1. Open the Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, Publisher, or PowerPoint).
          2. Click the Office button, then click the [application name] Options button.
          3. Click Add-Ins.
          4. From the Manage dropdown list select Disabled Items and click Go.
          5. Check the list for PDFMakerOfficeAddin:
            • If it is listed, then select it and click Enable. Close all dialog boxes and restart the Office application
            • If it is not listed, then make sure that PDFMOfficeAddin.dll is located in the '.../Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 10.0/PDFMaker/Office' folder. If the file is missing, then reinstall Acrobat.

Note: Microsoft Office Applications disable add-ins as a failsafe if the application is prematurely closed (for example, if the system wasn't shut off properly or the application crashed).

Add the COM add-in file to the Windows registry.

          1. In Windows Explorer, locate the COM add-in file (PDFMOfficeAddin.dll) and note the exact path, which may include spaces.
          2. Choose Start > Run.
          3. Type regsvr32 followed by a space, and then type the path that you noted in step 1, in quotation marks. For example: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\PDFMaker\Office\ PDFMOfficeAddin.dll "
          4. Click OK, and then start the Office application.

Check if Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-in is present in the list of available COM Add-ins for the Office Application.

          1. Launch Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, Access, or PowerPoint).
          2. Click the Office button and choose '[Application name] Options'.
          3. Click Add-Ins.
          4. From the Manage Dropdown list select COM Add-ins and click Go.
          5. Check the list for PDFMakerOfficeAddin and the checkbox in front of it is checked.
            • If the checkbox is not checked then check it, click OK and restart the Office application.
            • If the Office application doesn't allow you to check the checkbox and you have already tried Solution 1, then select Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-in, click Remove and follw the next step.
            • If Adobe PDFMaker COM Add-in is not present in the list of available add-ins, then click Add and navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\PDFMaker\Office\. Select PDFMOfficeAddin.dll, click OK, then restart the Office application.

            Thanks Ravi -

But your solution still does not work.

Part of the problem is that Word is looking for its addins in a folder located in:

            C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Addins

and Adobe is placing it in:

            C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office

The other part of the problem is that when I change the location of the folder by browsing to the Adobe folder and click on the PDFMakerOffice AddIn, I get an error message which tells me:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office\PDFMWord.dll is not a valid Office Addin."

This happens with the x64 version of the Addin and it happens even if I copy the Addin File to the Microsoft folder for Addins.

I am using Adobe Acrobat v.11 and MS Office 10.

            Any thoughts?

              Hi Gordon,

Please try to add the add-in located at : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office\PDFMOfficeAddin.dll"

              and check.

              Regards,

              Ravi.

                Ravi -

That worked, but the selection still did not appear in the Tool bar or Ribbon in any of the Office Apps.

However, I figured out that one could customize both the Tool bar and add a "Tab" for Acrobat and once I had moved the tab to the correct position and added the tab command to the toolbar, Convert to Acrobat correctly appeared in both locations.

Thanks for your assist.  I think that Adobe needs to figure out why the XI installer failed to make that install to begin with.  It sure is easier to remove from the toolbar then add to it.

Also, why is the standard Acrobat Logo not used in either the Tab or the toolar icon?  That is not at all good.  Its far harder to identify - particularly in the toolbar.

For what its worth, although AddIn management has been improved in Office 2013,  the Acrobat addin does not appear on the ribbon when it is made active.

I'm curious though. Does the Adobe addin have some functionality that the Office built-in Save to PDF does not have? And when compared to right clicking on an Office file in Windows Explorer and choosing one of the PDF conversion options, does it do something different?

If the Adobe addin converts Word comments to Acrobat comments, that would be great!

Yes indeed.  The Adobe plugin does convert word comments to Acrobat Comments.  It is one of the options in the pull down list selector in the word Adobe plugin icon that will appear in the tag the addin adds to the Word Desktop.

                      Dear Gordon,

                      I am running Windows 8, Office 2013 (32 bit) and Acrobat X.

I have the same problem that the "Acrobat" tab doesn't appear in the Office ribbon, and I cannot activate the PDFmaker from Office applications, say Word.

I tried to add a new tab named "Acrobat" to the Ribbon, but that didn't help, the Acrobat toolbar comes empty when selected and isn't filled with the PDF buttons.

Can you please elaborate more on the process you found which solved the problem for you?

                      Thanks in Advance,

                      Aythan

I am sorry Aythan, but I do not use Windows 8 and have no idea how the fix described above would work in it.

                          Hi Gordon,

                          Thanks for your quick reply.

Still, can you better describe step by step what you did?

Perhaps it would work for me too on Windows 8, if I do it correcty ...

                          Thanks

                            Aythan -

This was a project some three or four months ago, I have no idea what exactly I did and it would take a heck of a lot of time to recreate it.

As I read above, the problem was that Word was looking for its addins in a folder located in:

                            C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Addins

                            but Adobe placed it in:

                            C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office

When I simply switched the location of the addin folder to the correct location, all that happened as a result was that I got an error message:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office\PDFMWord.dll is not a valid Office Addin."

Ravi the tod me to transfer the PDFMOfficeAddin.dll addin to this location:

                            "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PdfMaker\Office

I did that and the Acrobat addin worked.  All the rest was customization.

Do you know how to customize the Tabs and the Ribbon in MS Office apps?

                              Gordon,

                              1.  I do not know how to check where Word is looking for addins.

2,  I do know how to check what is Word's current idea about addins,  as follows:

When I navigate to:   File > Options > Addins  I get a table of all the addins of Office.
The first line in the table is:

Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM addin    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Arobat 10.0\PDFMaker\Office\PDFMOfficeAddin.dll     COM Addin

Down on that panel, I can push the button the manage a few things.  I select "COM addins" and press the button.
There I get a smaller table, of only COM addings from the previous table.   The first line is:
                                            Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin
and the checkbox on the side is checked.

Hence, I figured that my Office does know about the PDFMaker, knows its place, and has it registered as something to activate.

                              3.  The contents of the PDFMaker\Office is:

                                  C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\PDFMaker\Office>dir
Volume in drive C is OS
                                    Volume Serial Number is C2BB-CE8E

                                    Directory of C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\PDFMaker\Office

So, I guess everything is in place already.

                              4.  I know a little bit about Word customization.

I can go to File > Options > Personal ... ribbon
where I can see all the toolbars and all the commands which might or might not be part of any toolbar.

I don't see the Acrobat toolbar here, and I don't see any of the PDF commands either (in any of the commands divisions).

I have added a new toolbar and named it "Acrobat".
It is left empty even when I exit Word and reenter, or even if I reboot.

I don't know any further about the customization process.

But, I have noticed that you have Acrobat 11, while I still have Acrobat 10.

Perhaps Acrobat 10 is not compatible with Office 2013.

                              Thanks

Sorry I could not be of greater help.

To customize the ribbon and the toolbar, place your cursor on the Ribbon and Right Click your mouse.

                                  Hi Gordon,

                                  1. I started my first message above with:
                                    "I am running Windows 8, Office 2013 (32 bit) and Acrobat X."
I don't know where you took the idea that I use Apple from.
                                  2. Your way to customize the ribbon is shorter, but brings one to the same place.
                                  3. Meantime I have removed the X eddition, and installed the XI.     The same problem stayed though.
                                  4. Then, I checked for Updateds, and installed them.
A new tab appeared in Word:  "ACROBAT"  (all caps), with all the known buttons inside.
                                  5. So, my conclusion is that Acrobat X and XI origianl versions are not compatible with Office 2013,
but (at least for the XI) there is an Update which solves the problem.

                                  Have fun,
                                  and
                                  Thank you

You may not be able to get it on OFFICE 2013. I suspect an update of AA XI will do that eventually, but AA X is now to the stage of security updates, not feature updates. Thus I would not expect AA X to service OFFICE 2013. AA 9 has never serviced OFFICE 2010 and that is a similar update issue.
