3. Re: Raid setup problems
Stu S Oct 30, 2012 6:37 PM (in response to Cocovanna)I seem to remember reading something about having to install some intel raid drivers prior to installing windows 7 (after a while, posts sort of blur together for a newb), but don't know if this applies to this motherboard. First time builder, finally getting ready to do a very similar build with the same motherboard, so if any of the regulars can clear this up, thanks.

4. Re: Raid setup problems
Cocovanna Oct 30, 2012 11:55 PM (in response to Stu S)I'm not raiding the OS volume, so there should be no need to install raid during win install (and yout can't install it before ;-) ). I'll get back with my results

5. Re: Raid setup problems
Alan Craven Oct 31, 2012 1:22 AM (in response to Stu S)The document that Martin has pointed you at is almost certainly relevant to your problem.
As Stu says, you should have installed the Intel RAID pre-install driver using F6, with RAID selected in the BIOS, when you began to install Windows. This is necessary even if you are not installing RAID arrays at the outset, if you intend to do so at some future point. Given your error messages, I suspect that your Intel HDD ports were set at the default of EIDE when you installed Windows? If so, you will have to re-install Windows again to be sure that you have a good install.

7. Re: Raid setup problems
ECBowen Oct 31, 2012 6:47 AM (in response to Cocovanna)Unfortunately the Registry fix that stopped the error loading the HAL on bootup when changing controller modes with the Intel ICH controllers do not work with the X79 C600 series controllers. You will have to reinstall windows after changing the controller mode.

8. Re: Raid setup problems
Cocovanna Oct 31, 2012 6:54 AM (in response to ECBowen)Eric, can I just install it normally (after changing BIOS setting to raid) or do I have to use the F6 method?
(I would prefer to avoid reinstall, if possible, but at this stage it is easier than hours of troubleshooting anyway -- I might just spend half an hour later today to be sure the fix doesn't work).
Thanks for the info

9. Re: Raid setup problems
ECBowen Oct 31, 2012 7:00 AM (in response to Cocovanna)When you start the install of Windows with the Socket 2011 boards, it will tell you that the setup can not find any available disks. At that point it will ask you to point to the controller drivers. At that poiint you will have to have the F6 drivers for the Socket 2011 Intel raid controller on a flash drive.

10. Re: Raid setup problems
Alan Craven Oct 31, 2012 7:40 AM (in response to Cocovanna)Further to Eric's response, there appear to be two drivers - a pre-install driver you use with F6 if needed, and then the full driver which you install after Windows is installed. At least that is the position for Gigabyte boards.
You should check with Asus for the most recent drivers. there has been a spate of new drivers for X79 boards recently, and not all are related to windows 8.

Stu S Oct 31, 2012 8:01 AM (in response to Alan Craven)Alan & Eric, thanks. Having never done this before, can you outline the process for the pre-install driver?

14. Re: Raid setup problems
Cocovanna Oct 31, 2012 8:22 AM (in response to ECBowen)Eric, I assume you mean a reinstall is required, even though my SATA setup was AHCI (and not EIDE), right?

15. Re: Raid setup problems
ECBowen Oct 31, 2012 8:55 AM (in response to Cocovanna)With the X79 Controllers I dont believe you can switch from IDE to raid either. You will have to reinstall either way.

Cocovanna Oct 31, 2012 10:47 AM (in response to Stu S)Stu, your link didn't provide working drivers for my MB. I got the drivers from ASUS's download instead. Installing right now

18. Re: Raid setup problems
Cocovanna Oct 31, 2012 12:23 PM (in response to Stu S)It works like a charm after reinstalling with ASUS drivers.
Tnx for all your comments, you've saved my day :-)
