Adobe Flash Player Auto Install downloads same file repeatedly after successful installation.

Adobe Flash Player 11 Active X 11.5.502.135 was successfully installed and working in browser.  Auto download continued to download and install same version repeatedly, at least every hour.  Uninstall and re-install does not fix the problem.  The previous version, 11.5.502.110 did the same thing.

PC with Windows 7 64bit.  Browser:  IE 9.0.12,   32 bit.  Have temporarily uninstalled Flash Player to stop the auto downloads.

I am having the same problem, except that instead of installing repeatedly, I am repeatedly receiving a pop-up asking if it is okay for Adobe systems to make changes to my hard drive.  If I say "yes," then Adobe flash player is downloaded and installed, even though the current version has been previously installed on my hard drive.  (I'm grateful that I am getting this question instead of having the install happen automatically, but also surprised, since I indicated during a previous install that it was okay for Adobe to automatically install updates.)  How do I get Adobe to stop this pop-up message????

No answer here, either, just the same problem.  It asks to install the same version over again as an "update" about every 3-4 hours.  I just click 'quit' when it gets to the accept agreement page, but it is rather annoying.

There must be a bug in the automatic updates which does not recognize this version as already being installed.

This should  be an easy fix for someone at Adobe, given it worked properly with the automatic updater before this version was released... (hint, hint)...

For reference: I use an HP desktop, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit Intel processor.

I was incorrect when I implied Adobe Flash update is installing without my prompt.  I must click OK in the security window for the Adobe installation window to open.  I then have the option to Install or Quit.   If I install, the same version that I already have installs.  If I click on Quit, the installation window closes but the Adobe download prompt for the same file will soon reappear, usually within an hour.  My issue appears to be the same as yours.

I unistalled Adobe Flash Player temporarily pending resolution of the issue.  The frequent update pop-ups seem to have stopped for now.

How long have you had this problem?  Mine started about a week or so ago with Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 11.5.502.110.   I was very recently updated to 11.5.502.135.  The repeat update issue has continued until I uninstalled the newest version.  I am currently without Flash Player but hoping to get this resolved.

I have Windows 7 and IE 9.

I kept it installed and just quit, I think that's better than going without the flash player.  It started for me a couple weeks ago as well.  Not sure which version it started with, I assumed it was always just the latest since I don't imagine they do more than an update a month or so.

I wonder if you can just stop the AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc in the task manager and see if that works?  I suppose you would have to re-do that every time you re-boot, but that might be another solution.

Thanks for the comments.  I have a Dell Studio laptop that is a couple years old, running Windows 7 and IE9. 

I don't recall the exact sequence of events, but I think that what happened is that I received some kind of online message from Adobe about a week ago asking if I wanted to upgrade to the current version of Flash Player.  I said yes and went through the install process.  I believe the version that installed is 11.5.502.135. 

I then began to receive these messages asking me to install the current version.  My first thought was that I had been "had" by some kind of worm or virus, and I remembered some advice that I'd received a while back about never installing updates in response to those pop-up requests.  The advice was to say "no" to the popup, then go to the software vendor's website and download and install the update from there.

Anyway, I uninstalled both Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader, then re-installed both from the Adobe website.  However, this did not eliminate the problem with the repeated popup messages.

I think that Michael Thorson is correct when he says that "There must be a bug in the automatic updates which does not recognize this version as already being installed."  If we are having this problem, I would assume that a LOT of people are having it, and that Adobe would react quickly.

If you don't mind, please try stopping the AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc in your task manager to see if that temporarily resolves the pop-up update issue.

I checked my task manager but the FlashPlayerUpdateSvc was not listed, probably because I uninstalled Flash Player earlier today.  If stopping the update service works, we can use that as a temp fix until we get the real issue resolved.

I did the same as you, uninstalled Flash Player and reinstalled same directly from the Adobe web site.   As with you, did not resolve popup issue.

I stopped the FlashPlayerUpdateSvc, and an hour later have not had a re-occurrence of the issue.  I'll come back and re-post if it does.

It does beg the question of how one is going to get future updates if you have to stop the service to avoid the bug with this update...

Where do I find the Flash Player installation log on Windows?

If possible, please temporarily add the following line to your mms.cfg file (located in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash or C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash).  Once added, let your machine run intil the next time the download occurs and then send the log file.

Thanks for the log.  Could you also post a screenshot of any UI that is appearing?  While the hourly issue does lead me to suspect the auto update system, showing any UI wouldn't be very "silent".

As I mentioned yesterday, we believe this is being caused by our .cab installation.  This is specific to Internet Explorer and typically occurs when a webpage attempts to load Flash and specifies a minimum version.  If Flash Player does not match this version, the .cab install is automatically started for the user as convenience.

We're now trying to determine if we can get IE to log the entire .cab process.  Unfortunately, Flash Player's install log pick up the action too late in the process to give us the details we're looking for.  Getting URLs might also help, as we'd like to examine the html to determine if it's something as simple as the page asking for a version of Flash that's not yet available.

Before I uninstalled FlashPlayer I was getting repeat AdobeFlash update notices about every 30 minutes no matter what web pages I was on.   I browse multiple pages every day so it is impossible to determine which pages may trigger the download notice.  Once it happens, it repeats two or three times an hour  no matter what I do.  The uninstall seems to have stopped it for now, except for the Windows security popup at the bottom of the browser showing that the web page wants to download FlashPlayer.   The option (as for all downloaded executable files) is either run or save.   I close the security popup without downloading Flash because once I do a FlashPlayer install, the Adobe auto-download notices again appear repeatedly.

The news pages that I frequently use are: www.washingtonpost.com, www.msnbc.msn.com  (both US and World news pages) and home.myhughesnet.com

This issue started about 10 days ago for me with build 11.5.502.110.   The build I uninstalled yesterday was 11.5.502.135

Interesting.  Can you show me what the "Adobe auto-donwload notices" dialog looks like?  I've been under the assumption that you would see the security popup each time.  Similar to the behavior in the video below:

Could you also check your Temporary Internet Files folder for files that begin with "?CodeDownloadErrorLog"?  If these exist, please zip them up and send them to ccampbel@adobe.com.  It's possible that these might also give us clues.

You can find your Temporary Internet Files folder using the following steps:

1. Open either Microsoft Internet Explorer or the Windows Control Panel.
2. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu and choose the Internet Options... menu. In Control Panel. open the Internet Options list item. In either case, a new window titled "Internet Properties" appears.
3. In the Temporary Internet Files section of the Internet Properties window, click the "Settings..." button. A new "Settings" window appears.
4. In the "Settings" window, click the "View Files..." button.

My Adobe install notice does not look at all like the image in your posting.  It rather looks like the popup described by J3113q in Posting 24.   The small IE security notice appears at the bottom of the web page and reads as follows:  "This website wants to install the following add-on 'Adobe Flash Player' from 'Adobe Systems Incorporated'"   There is an Install button to the right which I have not used.  I exit the security window.  The same small security window often appears at the bottom of web pages when a commercial popup is blocked on the website.  You can then choose to allow the popup once, or always, or exit the security notice to deny the popup. 

My situation differs somewhat from J3113q in Posting 24 in that I presently do not have FlashPlayer installed.  I uninstalled FlashPlayer on Wed and since that time have received no standard auto update notices for FlashPlayer from Adobe.  I do get frequent reminders as described above when FlashPlayer is needed on a particular web site.

Chris,  was able to locate the log file using the Windows Control Panel method.  The file has an IE logo and is in part called "?CodeDownloadErrorLog!............"

I tried to copy the file to my desktop without success.  I need to access a copy without affecting the original.  How can I do this?   Also,  I presently have no zip/unzip software on my PC.  What do you recommend that is easy to use and preferably free?

Chris, this is a follow-on to my comments in my Post 27.

Have have since downloaded and installed WinZip, evaluation version, and have attempted to locate the log file that I previously identified when I viewed IE temporary internet files which I could open when I clicked on "view files".  The path shown is: Peter\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temp Internet Files.

I tried to use the same path in Winzip to locate the log file.  The path I followed in Winzip is:  Peter\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Windows.......   Could not see the Temp Internet Files folder in the Windows folder.   Could it  be hidden? 

Need some help here.

When getting the User Account Control popup, do you have the ability to save the installer to your file system or does it just run immediately?  We're trying to understand what installer is actually being run.  My video showed the .cab install, but that doesn't appear to be what you guys are encountering.

If possible, it would be helpful if someone could take a video of this process and share it with us (via Youtube, etc.)  Cell phone quality would work fine if that's possible.

I've also read one report that this might be caused by an online ad frame that was requesting an incorrect version of Flash Player.  Has anyone tried clearing their cache and still had this occur?

It just ran immediately... the sequence is 1. browse the internet 2. "User Account Control" pop-up box appears in the middle of the screen (rest of screen blacks out and there is the one 'beep') Message: "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? Program name: Adobe Flash Player Verified publisher: Adobe Systems Incorporated File origin: Downloaded from the Internet 3. at this point I now say click the upper right 'x' to close the box and everything goes back to normal working on the internet (note, clicking 'no' or 'yes' does not get you out of the loop, you have to click the 'x' to shut the window).  Prior to figuring out it was just re-installing the same thing over and over, I'd click yes and then it would go into the adobe installation sequence you have in your video above.

I cleared my cache and I have not had a problem since, so maybe you are on to the solution in your message #35 re: the online ad frame.

In any event, I have not had a recurrence since last Friday.
