Harm Millaard Dec 26, 2012 7:51 AM (in response to steenmikkelsen2)You need a Grass Valley ADVC device (or similar) to convert analog to DV AVI. You need firewire 1394A in the computer, best with a TI chip, not the VIA chip.

UlfLaursen Dec 26, 2012 10:30 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I have used tha advc 100 ( now 110 I think) from Grass Valley for these kind of jobs, with great success. I have had both VIA chip and TI chip based 1394 controllers, and as Harm says, go for the TI based - I have had problems with the VIA I had.

Alex - DV411 Dec 26, 2012 10:16 PM (in response to steenmikkelsen2)Alternately, use BMD Video Encoder for $149 - slightly cheaper than ADVC-110 (~ $220), and much smaller. Doesn't have S-Video, but then you may not need one if your VHS player doesn't have it.
For the record, none of the Grass Valley (or any analog-to-DV) converters encodes into MPEG2 VBR - which is the standard format for DVDs. There used to be inexpensive analog-to-MPEG2 USB encoders but I don't see them around any more.
