1. Re: Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3
jjjhixon Jan 2, 2013 10:09 AM (in response to jjjhixon)OK, here's an update. I left the task running and went out to do some chores. It *has* made some progress, so...I guess it is running?
CPU usage shows ~ 8% for LR and disk activity typically shows 3 or 4 instances of LR doing reads and writes to my TEMP folder.
But, *man* is this a slow process!
I started it at 11:31 AM...the progress bar in LR showed ~ 50% immediately.
It is now 1:08 PM, and, the progress bar (which did not appear to be changing, now shows ~ 70%).
Hopefully, this is a bug that can be improved in a point release? It is incredibly slow!

2. Re: Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3
jjjhixon Jan 2, 2013 1:25 PM (in response to jjjhixon)OK. Sorry for the 'false alarm'. The operation completed successfully, it just took a very long time.
So...for anyone else doing the same thing, just be aware: it might look like 'nothing is happening' or the import from the secondary catlog is 'hung up', but...it is not hung up, just a bit slow.
Cheers,

Geoff the kiwi Jan 2, 2013 1:36 PM (in response to jjjhixon)Were your catalogs Optimised first? It can take some time for sure if a large catalog is involved.

4. Re: Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3
jjjhixon Jan 2, 2013 2:32 PM (in response to Geoff the kiwi)Yes, the catalogs were optimized, but...the master catalog on my desktop is
HUGE. I mean...really, really, HUGE.
So, that probably explains the very long time it took?
But...I was confused at first, and really did think that LR was 'stuck'
while importing from the smaller catalog and "Checking for changed duplicate
photos".
Next time, I'll just be more patient.
And...in the end, everything went as it should, and I now have all my edits
and new photos incorporated into my HUGE catalog on my desktop.

5. Re: Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3
Geoff the kiwi Jan 2, 2013 2:49 PM (in response to jjjhixon)Fantastic, what do you mean by huge. I run a catalog for each year that is then imported into my master catalog.
2012 catalog is 1.2 GB and the Master I cannot tell as it's too big to keep on my MBP!! Probably aroung 10GB.
Now that's a lot of checking for changed items to be done, so yes it takes time!!
Have a great 2013!!

6. Re: Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3
jjjhixon Jan 2, 2013 5:40 PM (in response to Geoff the kiwi)Well, I guess my catalog is not so huge?
The catalog itself is only 1.1 GB, but, the photo files themselves, that the
catalof references, take up a little over 480 GB. Most of them are stored
as DNG files, though I do have some collections of smaller JPGs.
I hope 2013 is great for you too.
