1. Re: Making a straight line aligned with text and adjusting length
Dave LaRonde Jan 3, 2013 9:06 AM (in response to prescovidprod)I'd use solids as track mattes to reveal the vertical & horizontal lines. Should go pretty quickly.
If you don't mind a rounded look on the end of the lines, you use the Stroke or Write On effects -- there are no rectangular brushes in AE. You could also animate a paint stroke, using it as a track matte... but then, the non-right-angle brush limitation would apply.
The basic ways of revealing stuff in AE hasn't changed a whole lot over the years.

Todd_Kopriva Jan 3, 2013 9:07 AM (in response to prescovidprod)I'd use shape layers and the Trim Paths shape operator. Then you get control over stroke width separate from scale, etc.

kind of awkward way to draw a line in an app.

Yup. No doubt about it.
AE practitioners have yearned for something less cumbersome for years. There must be a darned good reason why it hasn't happened yet. Or at least a reason that makes sense in San Jose, CA.

Todd_Kopriva Jan 3, 2013 10:17 AM (in response to Dave LaRonde)How is drawing a line with a shape layer cumbersome? You only have to click twice with the Pen tool active, once for each end of the line. How could it be more simple?

Mylenium Jan 3, 2013 10:21 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Yo're making it way too complicated for one simple effin' line, guys. Effect --> Transition --> Linear Wipe or Effect --> Generate --> Beam.

7. Re: Making a straight line aligned with text and adjusting length
prescovidprod Jan 3, 2013 10:25 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Well, because if you dont get it exactly correct and you want to make it longer or shorter, not only does that change, but the stroke starts scaling. So now you have simply a shorter line, you have a line that appears the same but is inevitably different point sizes and different scales that are maddening to match. I am animating several iterations of a kind of type/line template in 3d space. So i have made each on its own composition that is not 3d.
i thought you would be able to just click on the end of the line/path and make the line itself shorter or longer like in illustrator. Also when the scale changes, it changes its position slightly from its anchor point....

10. Re: Making a straight line aligned with text and adjusting length
Mylenium Jan 3, 2013 11:32 AM (in response to prescovidprod)Yeah, some simple thin solid with a linear wipe or the Beam effect's percentage could have done this easily...
