JSS1138 Jan 10, 2013 10:30 AM (in response to invisiblearts)Honestly, I thin you'd be wasting your money with that. You won't see any performance improvement.

2. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
invisiblearts Jan 10, 2013 11:05 AM (in response to JSS1138)Thanks Jim. So you don't think I'll see any difference? One reason I was thinking about doing this is because sometimes when I'm doing a render, or an extensive transcode with Media Encoder, one o my displays becomes a little glitchy. It will flicker, and scramble. Sometimes when working within PrP and doing things like resizing my windows, there will be image ghosting as I drag the windows around. I assumed this was because the GPU was being stressed with the transcoding tasks. Hence me looking into a seperate display card. You don't think that's the issue?
Also, FYI, I'm running a 20-inch viewsonic via DVI and a 30-inch HP via display port...if that matters
Thanks so much.

3. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
JSS1138 Jan 10, 2013 11:27 AM (in response to invisiblearts)To the best of my knowledge, the parts of the GPU that are used for processing in PP aren't the same parts that get used for the GUI, so while the glitching might go away, I don't believe you'd see any faster renders as a result.

4. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
invisiblearts Jan 10, 2013 11:34 AM (in response to JSS1138)I see. Thanks for clarifying. However if I did get a second card for displays that had also CUDA technology, I imagine render performance would increase.
If anyone from Adobe sees this and can confirm, I'd appreciate it. If it's determinded I should indeed get an additional card, I'd still be open for recommendations.
Thanks again Jim.

NO... PPro will only use the CUDA cores on one card... and having two cards has been known to cause problems... especially if they are not from the same "family" of nVidia cards, using the same driver

7. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
Harm Millaard Jan 10, 2013 12:09 PM (in response to invisiblearts)The only and very costly solution will be to use a Quadro for connecting the displays and using a Tesla C2075 for the CUDA acceleration . From results I have seen with a Quadro 6000 and a Tesla C2075, they do not perform any better than a cheapo GTX 460, despite around ten times the cost or even more. In other words, a complete waste of money.

8. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
invisiblearts Jan 11, 2013 12:23 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm, is what you're describing what they call the Maximus configuration?
All I need to know, preferebly from someone with Adobe, is whether Premiere will work properly (and take advantage of) of a GT120 with my two displays hooked up to it, and a Quadro4000 as a GPU.
It's hard for me to believe that having a seperate display card wouldn't fix the issues I'm having with my smaller 20-inch monitor (hooked up via DVI) going blank and scrambly while I'm transcoding and in the background, UNLESS this issue is simply due to a defective Quadro4000.
But if Premiere doesn't actually work with a second card as a dedicated GPU, I suppose it would defeat the purpose. Might I recommend the software is rewritten to allow for two cards?
Thanks to all.

10. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
Bill Gehrke Jan 11, 2013 3:54 PM (in response to invisiblearts)Forget that antique GT 120 (at least 4 years old and only 32 CUDA cores and 0.5 GB and that will never work with Premiere MPE) and use only the Quadro 4000 if you alread own it. If you want more MPE acceleration than the Quadro 4000 (only 256 CUDA cores) you will have to update to the new GTX 6xx series. Seems to me that I have seen that the latest OSX 10.8.2 has built-in drivers for the high-end GTX 6xx series.

11. Re: Recommendation for additional video card?
invisiblearts Jan 11, 2013 4:04 PM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Hey Bill, thanks for your response. The goal isn't for me to gain CUDA power with the 120. I'm just wanting another card that will handle all of my GUI tasks so that my existing Quadro4000 will be a dedicated GPU and not have to worry about display tasks.
Since my last post, my smaller 20-inch display via DVI continued to go blank and display gibberish when I was doing estensive GPU-related work. So I'm thinking I either need a second card to handle GUI tasks to let the Quadro work (unless it doesn't work that way), OR, something's wrong with my Quadro4000.
Anybody else using solely the Quadro4000 experience display glitches when doing extensive tasks within premiere (working with high-res images, rendering, transcoding with media encoder)?

Yes, one of my clients' systems (Z800, CS5, Quadro 4000) would crash on nearly GPU accelerated FX or function. Once the GPU was replaced, all was good again. Sounds like this might be the case here, as well.
