1. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
JSS1138 Feb 7, 2013 8:49 AM (in response to Jerambis00)I'd use Dynamic Link to get the AE work done, then skip SpeedGrade and just do the CC in Premiere Pro. You can accomplish a lot with Adjustment Layers.

2. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 10:39 AM (in response to JSS1138)So you would use dynamic link to take the Edited PP into AE, then add the effects, and would you then render it? Or are you able to now take the AE comp and through dynamic link bring it back into PP with all the new VFX?

3. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 11:36 AM (in response to Jerambis00)See this discussion on Dynamic Link workflow between PrPro and AE. Pay attention to Todd's comments.
Regard to PrPro - SpeedGrade see this help section on general workflow and that one on reusing looks. Can't comment this on however, 'cos I'm still on CS5.5.

No, no. I'd do it for each clip individually that required effects. Right click>Replace with After Effects Composition.

5. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 3:25 PM (in response to JSS1138)I think I get it... Really there are two main ways to do it...
Jim, you suggest making the tweaks to the clips in AE (assuming I know exactly what part of each clip I am using), then inserting them into my PP sequence.
Or, you can make a sequence in PP use DL to bring it into AE and add the FX, render it in a Lossless Codec, and then bring it back into PP.
Is this correct, or am I still a little confused?

6. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
JSS1138 Feb 7, 2013 4:12 PM (in response to Jerambis00)Still confused.
Edit your project in PP as normal. For any clips that need effects in AE, right click on that clip in the sequence and choose Replace with After Effects Composition. This loads that clip in AE and keeps it Dynamically Linked to PP. So any changes you make to that clip in AE show up automatically in PP, no export or intermediate files necessary.

7. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 5:55 PM (in response to JSS1138)Awesome, that is exactly the answer I am looking for! Thanks so much for the help!

8. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 6:07 PM (in response to Jerambis00)In real life relying on Dynamic Link sometimes is not wise. Once you gain some experience, you may probably want to read the discussion, link to which I submitted...

9. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 6:09 PM (in response to Fuzzy Barsik)Ya, I read the article and it seemed to mention several different ways to work, thank you for the input! Why is relying on dynamic link not wise?

10. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 6:22 PM (in response to Jerambis00)If you read, you would notice the answer from the very beginning: it's even entitled 'PPro with AE dynamic links slow to render'...
-
11. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 6:32 PM (in response to Fuzzy Barsik)Yes, but you could always just render each clip after you tweak it in AE and then replace it with the clip in PP, and your render time wouldn't really be affected in PP. Correct?
-
12. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 6:45 PM (in response to Jerambis00)Incorrect. The render time WILL BE affected: you can save on it dramatically, depending on AE composition(s) complexity.

13. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 6:49 PM (in response to Fuzzy Barsik)So then what is the best way to select the clip and the exact in and out point in PP to add into AE?
-
14. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 7:06 PM (in response to Jerambis00)If you start from PrPro, the best way is to select a clip or a group of clips in PrPro timeline, right-click and chose 'Replace with AE Composition'. Bear in mind, you should take care of handles. See e.g. this workaround.

15. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 7:17 PM (in response to Fuzzy Barsik)Very good idea on duplicating the layer and expanding it to keep the transitions! So you suggest right clicking in the PP sequence on the clip and chosing "replace with AE Comp" (same as what Jim said), then you would just render that AE comp after you are done and replace the original PP clip with the new AE Comp (instead of dynamic linking the AE Comp back into PP). Correct?
-
16. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Fuzzy Barsik Feb 7, 2013 7:24 PM (in response to Jerambis00)Correct answer is to plan your workflow. If your PrPro project contains just several simple AE compositions, you don't have to render digital intermediates. If those comps are complex ones, render DIs out of AE and replace dynamically linked comps with them.

17. Re: How would your workflow order go from PP to AE to Speedgrade
Jerambis00 Feb 7, 2013 7:30 PM (in response to Fuzzy Barsik)Awesome. Thank you both very much for the help, it has been really helpful!
