1. Re: Moving project to external drive w/renamed clips
JSS1138 Feb 21, 2013 8:24 AM (in response to NickBoston)Honestly, the best option in today's world of tapeless media and labyrinthine folder structures is usually to never move the media. So I'd first ask, why do you want to do this?

2. Re: Moving project to external drive w/renamed clips
NickBoston Feb 21, 2013 12:05 PM (in response to JSS1138)I want to move the project to an external drive to free up space. I brought my laptop away on a music video shoot and want to now move it off my computer and put it on my larger harddrive.

NickBoston Feb 21, 2013 12:12 PM (in response to shooternz)Don't rename files? Do you mean at all or when I use the Project Manager to transfer files?

5. Re: Moving project to external drive w/renamed clips
shooternz Feb 21, 2013 12:22 PM (in response to NickBoston)Dont rename them at all ever (IMHO) ...and certainly not between transferring source files from one completed project on one computer to another computer.
Premiere relies on the exact names that were used in the edit process. Changing location is not an issue because it allows re linking to the ne location.
But...finding file names it does not know...IMPOSSIBLE!

6. Re: Moving project to external drive w/renamed clips
NickBoston Feb 21, 2013 12:47 PM (in response to shooternz)Okay, I just figured something out. Hopefully I'm correct with my assumption: I used the project manager again to transfer the files and unchecked the "remane files to match project" box and when I opened the project just now the clips kept my renaming in the project window. This is interesting. So basically, it returned the files to their original names in the file structure and kept my names untouched in Premiere. So, it works well.
