1. Re: Converting RGB to CMYK - Huge color shift. Any tips on getting some decent color back?
eartho Feb 27, 2013 12:57 PM (in response to TwitchOSX)which cmyk profile are you using? try a different one.
aside from that, there is no such thing as green in cyan, magenta, yellow, black. The best you'll ever get is a % of c+y, which will never, ever repro a vibrant green.

TwitchOSX Feb 27, 2013 3:05 PM (in response to eartho)So... how would one reproduce a magazine cover with a bunch of lush green plants like a gardening magazine or something?

eartho Feb 27, 2013 3:30 PM (in response to TwitchOSX)Extra colors on press probably. Also, the colors are relative to the page. You're only seeing colors within a certain range, as opposed to what's possible in rgb.
If you want to see what colors are reproducible in 4-color, just create a new cmyk doc, pick the brightest rgb green, fill a layer with it, then use a hue/sat layer to adjust sat/light. This wil show you what's reproducible within the gamut of your profile.

Mylenium Feb 28, 2013 12:01 AM (in response to TwitchOSX)You can boost greens by printing another pass of yellow with the same halftoning on top of your cyan areas. Black and yellow naturalyl also can give the appearance of certain dark green colors, but this may only work on vbery fine rasters. Printing an extra color is always an option, but also keep in mind that a lot depends on what paper is used and how it interacts with the inks. Also many magazines use gloss coating on their front page, which hugely influences perception of "depth" in the colors. And don't forget all the perceptional tricks - such mags often use colored pages because the green looks more saturated when surrounded by a dark red, brown or ocre...
