flash player problems

My computer shows Flash Player version 11.6.602.180 installed and it's been working (earlier versions) just fine until about 2-3 weeks ago.  Now, everytime I go to view a video (on facebook) or listen to Pandora, my computer tells me I need to download the latest version, which again, my computer shows is enabled.  My OS is XP.  

When I try to follow the prompts to download, when it says it's complete to hit "FINISH", my computer opens up an AOL browser that just sits there..... and of course, I am still unable to view or listen to the above mentioned applications.

How do I get flash player to work on my computer again?

AOL browser?  I thought that had been obsolete for many years.  Are you installing with that browser?
