John T Smith Mar 20, 2013 8:31 AM (in response to Ringolandia)Almost any card will work with graphics, depending on the picture size... but since this is part of the Premiere VIDEO editing area... what kind of video do you edit... and are you Windows or Mac?
You would buy a Quaddro card ONLY if you also have a 10 bit monitor

Ringolandia Mar 20, 2013 9:05 AM (in response to John T Smith)John:
I'm still working on an 8 core Mac Pro and do not have a 10-bit dreamcolor type monitor. The GPU is the Radeon HD 5770 1 GB and I upgraded to 14GB of RAM. However, I'm going to be editing short Docs (about 12 mins.) in RED EPIC and Scarlett as well as DSLR footage. I'm barely switching over from 7 years of cutting in FCP (RIP) and am anxious to have a professional Pr Pro CS6 editing suite.
Best.

John T Smith Mar 20, 2013 9:24 AM (in response to Ringolandia)For a list of supported nVidia CUDA cards go to the CUDA help page - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/773101
I don't do Mac, but I think I've read that two specific ATI cards work, with specific (or later) Mac operating systems

SAFEHARBOR11 Mar 20, 2013 1:06 PM (in response to John T Smith)The Quadro 4000 will yield substantial performance benefits in Premiere via GPU acceleration, especially when trying to push 2k footage. More layers, more effects in realtime. The 10-bit reference spawned from the graphics mention, but the display being used has nothing to do with editing performance in Premiere and you would see definite benefits with the 4000 card

Ringolandia Mar 21, 2013 12:25 PM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Thank you guys.
In terms of having a third monitor for CC or simply client viewing of source and program panes, is there a recommended display or playback card that works well with the Quadro 4000 GPU other than a capture/playback AJA or Black Magic Card? I here there is a Quadro K4000 that has 4 display ports. Will this K4000 display the source and program cards separately the way video playback cards do?

6. Re: Wondering what GPU is best to get started with.
ECBowen Mar 22, 2013 10:10 AM (in response to Ringolandia)If you currently lack a 10Bit display then I would suggest just getting a Geforce card for GPU processing and keep the ATI card for display out. Once you have a 10bit monitor then you can look at the 10Bit color options whether a Quadro K series card or I/O Card. Keep in mind the Quadro 4000 is EOL now since the K4000 has released and is shipping.

Ringolandia Mar 22, 2013 1:02 PM (in response to ECBowen)In this configuration with 2 drivers for to different GPU cards, will there be a driver conflict? Nvidia and PNY's tech support told me that there will be a driver conflict. Hmm, I'm confused. Thanks.

8. Re: Wondering what GPU is best to get started with.
ECBowen Mar 22, 2013 1:07 PM (in response to Ringolandia)OSX has been able to handle this better than Win 7 it seems. Many Mac users are reporting that works fine.

9. Re: Wondering what GPU is best to get started with.
Ringolandia Mar 22, 2013 1:10 PM (in response to ECBowen)I'll consider this economic solution. Will the ATI card know to only display the Source & Program pane in Pr and the Viewer & Canvas in FCP 7? This the monitoring funtion of I/O cards.

10. Re: Wondering what GPU is best to get started with.
ECBowen Mar 22, 2013 1:18 PM (in response to Ringolandia)You can set the output to full screen either the source or program monitor if I understand your question correctly. I/O cards give you some different monitoring features and connectivity. Also AE will output Full screen automatically to an I/O card versus having to manually adjust the preview frame for AE with a video card.

Ringolandia Mar 25, 2013 7:34 AM (in response to freddy.anderson)It looks like this card is as powerful as the Quadro 4000, which according to ECBowen is EOL. The GTX 680 is also less expensive. Any other differences between these two cards?

Bill Gehrke Mar 25, 2013 8:51 AM (in response to Ringolandia)For Premiere the GTX 680 is much more powerful than the Quadro 4000

medeamajic Mar 27, 2013 5:14 AM (in response to Ringolandia)You can replace the Quadro with a GT 650 Ti or even a GT 640 because the 600 series can support 4 monitors. 2GB of RAM might be wise when running 4 monitors. .
