conflict with windows XT, IE8 and adobe

I can not get my XT computer with windows IE8 and adobe 11 to work.  I can not get youtube videos for example to play.  I have downloaded Flash player 11.  something 601 over 10 times and ultimately Google Chrome, as is suggested, and I still can not get the flash player to work.  Flash player should be able to work with IE8 and not need Google chrome.  What is, how do I get this problem resolved so I can fully use my computer.  russ walker
