When I transfer a library book to my Nook that I have downloaded to digital editions, I receive an error message on my Nook "User Not Activated". How do I correct this?

For a Nook eReader, make sure that you activate the device.
First, make sure ADE (Adobe Digial Editions) is actived with a proper Adobe ID, not the 'do not authorize with an Adobe ID'.
Then, with the Nook plugged into the computer via USB and with ADE running, got menu~Library~Authorize Device.

I followed the above instructions, then deleted the library book from the Nook that I could not open and then transferred the book from ADE to the Nook. I get the same error. What should I try next? I am currently running ADE v1.7.

Check out a different library book and transfer it to see if that works.
It is possible that the first book got asssociated with an anonymous/implicit ID that ADE creates if you don't register an explicit one.
If the book is once associated with that ID, you can't use it with a different 'real' ID.
You probably won't even be able to check it back in to the library: you may just have to wait till it expires.
That implicit ID makes the very first use of ADE a little simpler, but it has very limited function and causes lots of problems.
Its main purpose seems to be to lay traps for unwary users.

I deleted all the library books on my Nook and downloaded a totally different book. This still didn't work. I have always had an ADE ID, not the implicit ID you refer to. What do you suggest I try next? I'm baffled.

Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state..
Try completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your Adobe ID.

First I want to thank you for helping me!!! I removed my authorization, restarted ADE and completed the authorization steps, deleted the library book from ADE, re-downloaded it from the library site, transferred it to my Nook ... same error.

You may have an issue with the Nook similar to the issue I guessed you might have on ADE.
Try completely removing any authorization from the Nook

I deleted the library book from ADE and the Nook, followed your instructions above, downloaded a new book, transferred it to the nook. I can open the book on ADE but I still get the same message on the Nook and can't open the book.

The instructions below are a more extreme way of removing (possibly corrupt old) authorizations from the Nook.
If you look at the contents of the Nook in a file manager such as Windows Explorer or Mac Finder,
you may find a directory with a name like '.adobe-digital-editions'
It could be a hidden folder, so enable viewing of hidden folders.

I am currently running ADE v1.7.
You might try with 1.7.2, which was the lastest 'old' version,
or even with the latest v2.0 (in my experience things are less likely to work with v2.0 thqn with 1.7.2)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

The forum software is sometimes corrupting the link above. There shouldn't be a blank in 'editio ns.html'. The following redirects to the same page: http://tinyurl.com/diged172
