1. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
Paul Riggott Apr 22, 2013 1:20 PM (in response to AttilaHan)You can't, the changes are stored in the dng.

2. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 1:23 PM (in response to Paul Riggott)I think so Paul ... but reference says that it is possible.

Paul Riggott Apr 22, 2013 1:25 PM (in response to AttilaHan)Nope, you can't.

4. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 1:29 PM (in response to Paul Riggott)Complete paragraph: "When a camera raw image file is processed with Camera Raw, the image settings are stored in one of two places: the Camera Raw database file or a sidecar XMP file. When a DNG file is processed in Camera Raw, the settings are stored in the DNG file itself, but they can be stored in a sidecar XMP file instead. Settings for TIFF and JPEG files are always stored in the file itself."
And it adds at the end of the same page: "If you want to store all adjustments to DNG files in the DNG files themselves, select Ignore Sidecar “.XMP” Files in the DNG File Handling section of the Camera Raw Preferences dialog box."

5. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 1:32 PM (in response to AttilaHan)What is the function of the "ignore sidecar .xmp files" option in the DNG File Handling section of the Camera Raw Preferences dialog box?

6. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
Paul Riggott Apr 22, 2013 1:34 PM (in response to AttilaHan)Any sidecar for a dng file will be ignored, easy to prove.
Take any raw file and set the brightness to something silly, save the changes, then rename the xmp file to that of a dng filename. open the dng in ACR and see what changes have been made.

7. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 1:42 PM (in response to Paul Riggott)Yes, you're right, I agree with you ... I try to understand what "ignore sidecar .xmp files" option does and the reference says that if we unchecked it, adjustments made to a DNG file are stored in a sidecar .xmp file.

8. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
PECourtejoie Apr 22, 2013 3:06 PM (in response to AttilaHan)One way to do it is to make the DNGs read only.

9. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 3:16 PM (in response to PECourtejoie)Thanks a lot ...
If a DNG file is read-only, then we can write to file directly with the "ignore sidecar .xmp files" checked.
Do you know any other function of this option?

10. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
AttilaHan Apr 22, 2013 3:49 PM (in response to AttilaHan)I think that this option can be named more clearly according to its function ... reference book also is not clear about the function of this option.

11. Re: Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...
Noel Carboni Apr 22, 2013 5:43 PM (in response to AttilaHan)For a long time I have been hoping (and asking) for Adobe to offer configuration options so as to avoid writing into ANY kind of file, but to use the sidecar XMP or central database instead. I'm not so concerned about DNGs as out-of-camera JPEGs, but the same concept would apply to your request.
To date they seem to believe that inconsistency is best.
