flash player upgrade program deletes itself

Adobe Flash Player 11.7.700.169 upgrade installation problem

Operating system: Windows XP sp3 (32-bit)

Browser: Firefox 20.0.1

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX Version: 11.6.602.171

Adobe Flash Player Plug-in Version: 11.6.602.180

Experienced odd behavior exhibitied by the installation executable while trying to complete a routine upgrade of Flash Player. After clicking on the icon for the installation program, the  exe file deletes both itself and its download record, while failing to complete installation. No error message appears. Flash player fails to upgrade.
