CS4 does not recognize some DNGs

    Jack Community Member

My Panasonic GK2 creates raw files as RW2. I use (on my Mac) LightRoom 3.6 to import, convert to DNG and develop the files.

Photoshop CS4 Camera Raw 5.0 for Mac had been processing these without a problem. As of about 30 h. ago, it appears that my system no longer recognizes this format. DNG's from my Panasonic camera are greyed-out in Finder. In Adobe Bridge CS4 preview pane they are displayed with the DNG icon.

Please advise if update for Camera Raw is available, and if you think that might solve thie issue.

OTOH, believe I now have a viable work-around: after editing in LightRoom, export to PSD for further exiting in PS-CS4.

No one should be running ACR 5.0.

With CS4 you should be running the last version that runs on it, namely ACR 5.7.0.213.

However, even your ancient, obsolete ACR 5.0 should have no problem opening DNG files, so something else is wrong with your system or workflow.

What happens if in Photoshop you choose File - Open and pick one of the DNG files?  Does it open in Camera Raw?

OK thanks, Station_two; I'm currently on a much older version of ACR. Downloading now.

See answer to next post regarding current results.

I used to see occasional update links automatically served, I believe, but could just as well be thiniking of other products. Surprised these do not come to us automatically.

              ============= Updated Posting ==============

Mac OSX 10.8.3 is not happy with the file just downloaded, Camera_Raw_5_7.zip.

Zip archive contains two files, Camera Raw.plugin ("Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."), and cameraprofiles.mpkg ("...can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers").

I might be able to set back my preferences to allow the second to be installed, if that is the correct procedure. What do you think?

Not sure I mentioned this but I am still able process all DNGs using the Development tab of Lightroom 3. From there I can easily export to PSD for further editing in PS when needed. Also found that LR has a good print routine.

Still, a bit of a mystery why SOME of the Panasonic DNGs can be opened and others, of similar vintage, cannot.

Noel, best asnwer I can give is "it's weird". Problem centers around some but not all files downloaded from Panasonic G2K camera, which are routinely converted from .RW2 format.

Just heard from a friend who heard at a workshop that conversion is contraindicated. So I'll stop doing that and see what happens. BTW did I mention that LR3 has no problem with any raw format.

To repeat, problem just surfaced in the last week or two. I actually tried un- and re-installing PS-CS4, but the reinstall failed. Good news is that My iMac has a convenient un-uninstall feature, so I'm back up and running, but of course with this continuing problem.

It sounds like you downloaded the camera raw 5.7 for windows as the mac version should be a dmg file.

You should also be able to go to Help>Updates from within photoshop cs4 or bridge to install all the updates for cs4 including camera raw 5.7

Perfect; downloaded, installed and checked operation. All DNGs are enabled and open fine.

Nevertheless, strange how the problem suddenly appeared, after years of 'normality'.
