Flash Player consuming resources

I have a netbook running Windows 7 32 bit with Flash Player 11.7.700.169.  I am using Firefox 20.0.1.  When Flash Player is running it slows the response time of my browser.  I have removed it from the start menu but still have to go into the task manager to stop Flash Player.  The problem is that I stop it and a few minutes later it is initiated again.  I understand that the page I am looking at may be automatically invoking flash player but this has gotten extremely frustrating.

Could it be the current version of flash player I am using or some other issue.

What is the process you stop in the Task Manager?  I have never seen any standalone Flash Player process running.
