Transferring books

I hook my ereader to my computer and open up Digital Editions but the reader does not show up as a new shelf so how can I transfer books from my computer to my reader?

Nobody can tell you anything without knowing what reader, what operating system, what version of ADE and so on...

Sorry, I should have known that.  I have a Sony PRS-T1 V1.0 Ereader.  When I open Digital Editions and click on about it says 1.7.2.1131 under Digital Editions.  My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.  I have been able to transfer books in the past and I am not aware of any changes in either the ereader or the OS.
