socahweir May 14, 2013 11:37 AM (in response to Jacob Bugge)I tried that and it comes in as a locked single layer PDF that cannot be changed.

Monika Gause May 14, 2013 11:45 AM (in response to socahweir)Embed it and then use the layer panel to examine all the stuff.

socahweir May 14, 2013 11:55 AM (in response to Monika Gause)By embedding the layer I am able to dig into the layer and access everything that is on that sincle layer. The problem is that there is only one layer with missing images available to view in the layers panel. The document I had saved yesterday had 20 seperate layers with multiple drawings inside of each layer. All of those layers and images are now gone and not accessible through the layers panel.

Monika Gause May 14, 2013 1:55 PM (in response to socahweir)Yes. Your file got corrupted. What is accessed now is the PDF part of the file. It doesn't contain layers.
Maybe someone can help you rescue the file, but it may also be permanently lost.

socahweir May 14, 2013 2:58 PM (in response to Monika Gause)That makes me sad. Thanks for your help. I guess I have been very fortunate that in my 10 years of using AI, I have not had a single corrupted file. Right now is just bad timing!

7. Re: Help! CS6 Illustrator deleted my layers
emscarlett Jul 8, 2013 5:52 AM (in response to socahweir)What is happening is masks are made all over the place when it flattens. I discovered that by using the mask release several times, the pieces, and images began showing back up. I started by clicking the outside box, then going to the menu under Object-Clipping Mask-Release. I had to do it several times, but eventually, everything became separate again, and I drug them back to their own layers. If you use menu Select-same-fill color, it helps to select the pieces and move them back onto their own layers.
