How do I deal with wrong update notices?

This is for adobe flash player on Mac OS 10.8.3

Starting with the last update, I never respond directly to update notices, I always go to "find version" when I see one hopping up and down:

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html#main__Troubleshoot_or_install_...

This morning, the icon for "adobe reader updater" appeared again and started hopping up and down in my apps bar.  So I went to "find version" and discovered that I have the current version.  So I refreshed the page to make sure it was not just left over from the last time.  It wasn't.

I do not want to click an icon that's giving me bad info -- I have heard that there are viruses that masquerade as updaters, even on Macs.  But it keeps hopping.  What should I do to make the ____ thing go away?

Thank you very much, I do appreciate your time.
