I cannot transfer e-books from my PC (Windows XP)
to my Sony PRST1 reader.
The reader does not show on the shelves in the Adobe Digital 2.0 book case.
How do I perform this task?

Hello,
Please follow the steps suggested in the below help document to transfer an eBook in Adobe Digital Editions to your eBook or eReader device.

Hope this helps in answering your question.
Regards,
Sharad

It is a Sony PRS T1, and it is on the list.
I also re-installed the Sony driver.

Thanks Sharad.
It is a Sony PRS T1, and it is on the list.
I also re-installed the Sony driver to be sure it is there.
I am still not connecting, and the device does not show on the book shelf in Adobe Digital.
Cheers,
Andy

Try ADE v1.7.2.
V2.0 has lots of bugs and is not compatible with earlier versions of XP.
One of the bugs is that the ADE2.0/Overdrive/PRS-350 combination does not work,
and I belive it is broken for other Sony readers too with V2.0.
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

Thanks for trying to help me with this
I used http://tinyurl.com/diged172
but I get an error message:
one or more downloads are not finished –
when I press OK to resume I get another error message:
error getting license
license server communication problem:
E_LIC_ALREADY_RETURNED
What now,
Andy

Not sure how far you got before you got the error message;
I am afraid a few extra questions before I can make any suggestions.

Was that in downloading/installing v1.7.2, or in trying to use it?
It was at the tail end of the installation
Are the problems now happening even before you try to access the Sony?
I can open ADE, but the device (Sony PRS T1) does not show on the book shelf in ADE
Is it a library book or a bought eBook that is giving the problem?
It is not a book issue – yet -
Are all the devices set up with the correct time and in the correct time zone?
I don’t know. Did not realize that could be an issue.
How do I check that out?

Q Was that in downloading/installing v1.7.2, or in trying to use it?
A It was at the tail end of the installation
Does that mean you never got 1.7.2 installed, so the remaining issues such as Sony not showing up were still with V2.0?
I don't think the time issue will be a problem until you get to the book stage, and probably not even then.
As long as computer and Sony are set to the correct local timezone and telling approx the right time, all should be ok.

I am still confused about this time zone thing.
My PC has been up and running for several years, and is currently showing the correct time, so that should be a check mark.
How do I check, and if necessary, change the time in the Sony software on my PC?

I think the timezone thing is the least of your worries; at least for now.
I raised it earlier when I though the E_LIC_ALREADY_RETURNED message mightd have come out of attempting to copy a library book;
but I now know you never got that far.
You can change the time on the Sony itself; at least you can on my PRS-350; at settings/general settings/date and time.
More important to getting things working is the other question:
Q Was that in downloading/installing v1.7.2, or in trying to use it?

The time on the reader is the same as it is on the PC.
The Sony reader software is installed on the PC.
I try and open the ADE 1.7.2 and get the following message
Resume pending tasks
One or more downloads are not finished. Do you want to resume pending tasks?
I press OK and get the following message
Error getting license
License server communication problem: E_LIC_ALREADY_RETURNED
Does the Sony reader software have to be OPEN in order for this to work?
What else can I do?

The Sony Reader software does not need to be open for ADE1.7.2 to work with the Sony.
The Sony driver installed with the reader needs to be running; which it probably will be if the Sony Reader software is installed.
ADE should work even without the driver, but won't see the Sony.
It sounds as if somehow ADE1.7.2 has got it into its head that you are already in process of trying to access a book;
possibly this is a leftover from a far-distant install you had forgotten about?
Try saying NO to the 'Do you want to resume pending tasks?' message and seeing if that helps.

You cannot select NO to the ‘do you want to resume pending tasks’ message.
The choices are ‘cancel’ or OK.
When I selected ‘cancel’ ADE attempted to do something more, and eventually it produced another error message:
Under the heading ‘software update’ it reads ‘The PRS T1 can be update to the latest version’
‘Do you wish to update now?’
In a window titled ‘update content’ it has posted the following message:
‘This update for PRS-T1 (1.0.05.11130) resolved issues related to the following features’.
Over top of this message is another message, under the title: ‘Windows – no disk.’
‘There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive\device\harddisk2\dr97.’
This message has a red button with an X on it, and ‘cancel’ ‘try again’ and ‘continue’ buttons.
The reader is in drive ‘G’ and connection to the PC is established, as the reader is in the ‘data transfer mode’.
I pressed ‘try again’ and then ‘continue, and it proceeded to download and install the update.
I then closed and re-opened the ADE, and the reader has been ‘authorized’.
When I opened the ADE, the Sony software also opened.
I closed the ADE and Sony software and was able to open the ADE software, with the reader in the data transfer mode, and no error messages.
BUT – the reader does not show on the shelves on the ADE.
WE made some process, but what do I do now?
Andy.
- Reader Store sign in
- Removal of Google Books (dependent on Country/Region setting) as no longer supported via Reader Store

Clutching at straws ...
Restart the computer.
Start ADE with the reader not plugged in. Plug in the reader and see if it appears.
If not, unplug the reader, stop ADE, plug in the reader and restart ADE.
~~~
Alternatively ...
As the reader is now authorized, you can get DRM books onto it by copying using a file manager (sideloading).
This may be a little less convenient than using ADE directly, but should at least work (fingers crossed).
Use ADE as usual to access the .acsm files and to download the DRM .epub files.
Now use Windows Explorer to copy the .epub files from the computer onto the Sony.
The books will be in a directory somewhere like C:\Users\<userid>\Documents\My Digital Editions,
probably a little different on XP (maybe My Documents\My Digital Editions, or ...???)
If you open a book for reading in ADE1.7.2 and hit ctrl-I it will give information including where the file is stored.
The Sony will probably show up as a drive called Reader, for example G:;
copy the books into the 'Digital Editions' folder on that drive.
'Safely remove' the Sony, unplug it, and you should be able to read the books.
Re-booted the PC.
Explored all options you listed.
Tried to drag-and drop onto drive ‘G’.
Nothing works.
Thanks for trying so hard.
Will there be a newer version of ADE some day?
Is Adobe trying to make this software work?
Andy.
Sorry I can't help any more ....
Will there be a newer version of ADE some day? I hope so, and I hope it is better rather than yet worse.
Is Adobe trying to make this software work? Again I hope so, but not much sign of it.
It is just about OK for experienced computer people when it works right, but still very awkward for the non-computer people it ought to have been designed for.
And a nightmare for everyone when it doesn't work right.
Hey, Andy. Did you ever get your problem resolved? I'm having this same issue now. I have a Sony PRS-T1 and it won't show up in the ADE. 😕
