When trying to install CS6, I got a message that the version was counterfeit. What gives?

I purchased a one user license for CS6 Upgrade and was provided a link for downloading it. I downloaded, extracted, and attenpted to install using a provided S/N : however, before the install completed, I received a message the the installation could not be completed and that the version I was trying to install was counterfeit. What gives?
