1. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
Silkrooster Jan 8, 2012 8:59 PM (in response to SedG1)If that does not work(which it should) you can right click on the file and reveal in explorer or finder(depending on the OS). Once you have the location of the actual file, you can then edit it in your choice of video editor's.

2. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
SaturnV Jan 8, 2012 9:13 PM (in response to SedG1)You can drag video clips from the Lightroom Library grid and drop them directly into the Project window in Premiere Pro.
Then you can select them in Premiere Pro and use Automate to Sequence to get an instant rough cut.

SedG1 Jan 9, 2012 4:52 AM (in response to SaturnV)I don't currently have premier pro but do have premier elements version 10 (latest version)
Can I also click and drag into premier elements?

Hal P Anderson Jan 9, 2012 7:50 AM (in response to SedG1)Why don't you try it? The worst that will happen is that it won't work.

5. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
SaturnV Jan 9, 2012 8:14 AM (in response to SedG1)Hal's right. The reason I always try drag-and-drop is because it's something that works in most programs on Mac and Windows; in other words, it would be weird if it didn't work. I already know Lightroom to be a good drag-and-drop source for transferring images to other software such as InDesign, my email program, the desktop, and so on (at least on the Mac, which is what I'm using).
Also, I don't have Premiere Elements, but you do, so you're definitely the one who will have to try it...just try dragging from the Lightroom Library grid to whatever area in Premiere Elements lists the files you use in a project. Please post back to let everyone know whether it worked or not.

Drag and drop video clips from Lightroom to Premiere CS5.5 doesn't work for me either.
Is there a special option you have to set first? I went through all the settings but didn’t find anything.
This is a very annoying problem. I hope you can help me!

SaturnV Feb 28, 2012 6:36 PM (in response to John Mayr)Are you on Mac or Windows?
Are you starting your drag from the Lightroom Library grid and ending in the Premiere project panel?

I am a Widows user and yes, I start from the Lightroom library grid view into the Premiere project panel.
But when I leave the Lightroom window the cursor becomes crossed out.

SaturnV Mar 6, 2012 1:37 PM (in response to John Mayr)I'm starting to wonder if maybe it isn't supported on Windows. Unfortunately, I'm on a Mac and not set up to check that...maybe another Windows user on the forum can?

10. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
John Mayr Mar 7, 2012 4:58 AM (in response to SedG1)That's my guess too. I tried even different PCs to make sure it is not a configuration issue.
Would be great if a Windows user could confirm that.

josephallannz Jun 16, 2013 3:39 PM (in response to John Mayr)Drag and drop from Lightroom 5 to Premiere Pro CS6 does not work. The cursor changes to circle with the line through it. Drag and drop for iTunes works fine so it would seem it is an issue with Lightroom. Like John I also find this very annoying problem. I am trying getting someone to notice this. Shouldn't be that hard to implement - drag and drop has been around since the 90s. Think Adobe is missing something here.

12. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
SaturnV Jun 16, 2013 7:05 PM (in response to josephallannz)Drag and drop from Lightroom 5 to Premiere Pro CS6 does work, as long as attention is paid to two things: The file format and the drop target. I just tried this with Lightroom 5 and Premiere Pro CS6 on OS X 10.8.4.
If you drop on the Project panel or Timeline panel for example, Premiere Pro CS6 will accept the drop from Lightroom 5. If you try to drop on other panels, you get the "can't drop" circle with the line through it.
If you are dropping on a valid panel and it's an acceptable import file format for Premiere Pro such as JPG or MOV, then the drop will be accepted. If you try to drag an unsupported format such as raw, a warning will appear.

josephallannz Jun 17, 2013 2:42 PM (in response to SaturnV)Thanks for the reply Conrad. Drag and drop from Lightroom 5 to Premiere Pro CS6 does not work on Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have paid attention to the two things you mentioned and still no luck. Looks like it's either an oversight or a bug with the Windows version.

14. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
whsprague Jun 17, 2013 3:56 PM (in response to josephallannz)After playing with this for awhile I came up with a workflow I like.
1. Make a project specific folder for Premier Elements.
2. Use Lightroom for organization, preview and selection, but don't bother with any editing. The scrubbing preview is wonderful. Make a collection for the project if you want. Lightroom works a lot better for this phase than PrE.
3. With what you want selected, videos, RAWs, .jpgs, etc, do right click, Export, Specific Folder, check the video block and select "Original". Rename if you want, or not.
4. Open PrE and start a new project making sure the project is in the specific folder you made for the project.
5. "Add media from files and folders". Select all the media in the project folder. If it is a big project, you can import selected media and put them in sub folders, like clips in one and stills in another.
6. Make sure you put the most important clip on the timeline first so as to let PrE create the best Project Settings (at least in version 11, where it is automatic).
7. Go to work in the video project. If you remember media you left out, you can go back to Lightroom, find it and export it to the project folder.
In many ways, "Edit in" from Lightroom doesn't make sense like is does with Photoshop (Elements) because there is so much you need to do with order, trimming and transitions on the timeline. It does make sense to use Lightroom to organize and preview, especially if you want to use stills mixed with clips in the same project.
If you want to do shareable slide shows on YouTube or Vimeo, PrE does a wonderful job of getting that right, music, naration and everything.
When I was first working with Lightroom 4 for video I was frustrated that the Export "Original" was NOT about the file format and that it exports (or copies) an exact duplicate of the "Original" file. Now that I see how well it works, I think it is an important tool. (There were posts here that J Kost at Adobe said "original" meant keeping the original video file format and it would make a new clip, with Lightroom corrections, in the orignial format. Since she said it and it didn't work, it was deemed a bug. Later her statement was corrected. If you want to keep Lightroom corrections and edits, you have to Export as H.264 or DPX, which will render, not copy, a new file.
I work with a SSD and found the greatest speed and convenience is to have everything in a project specific folder, including all the scratch disks. When the project is complete, I can send it ALL to a folder on an external drive, or BD data disk, for storage. If I later want to retrieve it for more work, I can put it back on the SSD, previews and everything.
I suppose one could say I'm burning up disk space by making copies instead of getting Lightroom to tell PrE where the original clips are. But, I like it that way because I like to do everything with copies.
FWIW, if you shoot RAW and want to mix the clips and and photos in one video , Premier Elements has ACR under the hood somewhere and has no issues with RAW files. (Note that I use a strong i7 computer with lots of RAM.)

15. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
josephallannz Jun 17, 2013 10:27 PM (in response to whsprague)A good work-flow that will include all Lightroom adjustments to photos. Agreed "Edit in" doesn't make sense like it does with Photoshop. The disk usage thing is a bit of a downside for the video, especially if only a few seconds are used from each video file which is what I tend to do. Hopefully they will get drag and drop working for Windows soon (as it does for OS X 10.8.4).

16. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
josephallannz Jun 18, 2013 4:20 AM (in response to areohbee)The examples I see on the website are for Photoshop and ViewNX, both of which will open an image file from Explorer (nb. when right-clicking in explorer and selecting "Open With"). When trying to open images files from explorer with Premiere Pro CS6 all that happens is Premiere Pro is opened. I would suspect the plug-in would not work because Premiere Pro can only open Premiere Pro Projects (not videos or photos). I can't see any way of telling Premiere Pro to import the files into the current project via the command line (which appears to be the interface of the plug-in).
I see you wrote the code so could you may be able to confirm that. Awesome site BTW.
I didn't know about the Lightroom SDK so I will take a look at that. Looks a bit hard though.

17. Re: Can I use "edit in" to move a video clip to premier or premier elements
areohbee Jun 18, 2013 4:43 AM (in response to josephallannz)Hi Joseph,
Yeah, if Premiere requires a project then trying to use the methods I described won't work, unless you figured out how to bootstrap the selected video(s) into a project somehow, and then open that instead.
Lightroom SDK does require a learning curve, to be sure, but if you have some inclination, the SDK forum will be very helpful - we're a small close knit group there (developers not as testy as reglar users - we're used to things not working ).
Cheers,
Rob
