failed to initialise

Hello.  Everytime I am prompted to update Adobe Flash Player or Reader I download the installer, start to install, but then the installer "fails to initialise".  My o.s. is XP.  How can this be fixed?

Download and run the offline installer from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#main-pars_hea... (after the heading Progress bar hangs...).

Thanks - I also have the same issue when trying to update Adobe reader. Is there a similar link for this?
