You need to run an Adobe DRM compatible app such as Bluefire.

Overdrive app works very well if you just want library books.

Apple chooses to make it difficult to copy files ot the iPad, so if you have .epub files on a computer you need to copy them indirectly.

Three ways are: Dropbox, iTunes, emailing files to yourself.
