3. Eat more red meat and egg whites.
By the way, what version are you using?

Should I use 6? Shape Builder still does not work. Just tried it.

I'm a veggie, so I cannot use 3. Tried 1 and 2. Fruitless.

Should I rent Illustrator to use the Shape Builder? What version should I rent???
Is nobody using the Shape Builder facing a similar issue?

Please delete your preferences. Chocolate if you like vanilla. Yankees if you like the Mets. Gin if you like Scotch. Fountain if you like felt tip. Kale if you like spinach.
This will get your Shape Builder building beautiful shapes.

Jacob Bugge Jun 30, 2013 2:37 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)Sorry, Kurt.

How do I delete my preferences?

About what blurry area are you talking?

36% from the left, 42% from the bottom of the screenshot (that would be about 30%/45% into the part of the workspace shown).

tromboniator Jun 30, 2013 5:04 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)Your problem is that you keep talking about the Shape Builder – what you need is the Shape Building, and you need to rent the Adobe Penthouse Suite. You know, up there in the Creative Clouds.

17. Re: Shape Builder does not work
[scott] Jun 30, 2013 5:08 PM (in response to tromboniator)I was going to look things up for you in the manual, Kurt. But I can't seem to figure out where I've placed them. They do come with the Adobe don't they? I'd hate to think I paid nearly $3000 for Adobe and there's not a reference regarding how to use it. My toaster comes with a manual.

19. Re: Shape Builder does not work
Kurt Gold Jul 1, 2013 11:05 AM (in response to [scott])Guys,
calm down, please. Let's try and bring us closer together.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly do appreciate well-intentioned advice. However – to tell you the plain truth – this thread suffers from a huge lack of well-structured conversation.
To put it in a nutshell:
I asked a question and provided relevant informations. Someone tells me to eat things that I really hate. Another chap claims that I'm using too many versions of Illustrator and – without being asked – moves the whole matter to a place that is probably not appropriate. I was then taught to delete my preferences, but although I'm gently asking how to do that, no one is willing to give me instructions. After that, a jumping jack argues that my screen capture is blurry (I took highest quality in my programme, so he obviously needs some new glasses, LOL). Shortly after, the Post Mover says that Smart Guides (what the hell is that?) will solve my issue. Then – suddenly – I'm supposed to rent another version of Illustrator, plus a recommendation to purchase a toaster and rent a T-Shirt. And all that just to get a Shape Builder that works?
Ok, let's try again:
I'm a graphic designer and I got that file from another highly respected graphic designer. Think of a cobweb. All I want to do is applying fills to the holes of the cobweb. He told me it has to be possible by using my Shape Builder.
Any ideas?

Maybe your highly respected fello designer was thinking of "live paint" and not the shape builder?
Dummies.com - life paint (The irony of the dummy site calling it LIFE paint instead of Live paint :-)

rcraighead Jul 1, 2013 11:21 AM (in response to Kurt Gold)I was having to much fun reading the "constructive" responses to offer one of my own.
On a serious note:
1. The problem using the "insert image" is because the page is scaled in your browser. Set it to 100% and the "insert image" icon will work (one of the wise guys, above, shared that, I think).
2. From your description I'd be using Live Paint. You can do that same thing as Shape Builder but it's none distructive.

Ok, maybe you and your friend can play with this then. See how the fireman shapes are colored like a spider web like you wanted. Enjoy, I assume that since it's for preschoolers you will understand without having to read your toaster manual?

Wade_Zimmerman Jul 1, 2013 12:24 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)It is hard to say kurt what the problem is from he screenshot.
Can you describe what you are trying to unite, delete or select withge shape builder tool that is wht you wish to accomplish.
For instance are you trying to connect several of the cellls into a shape. Are tou trying to fill the cells with color or tone?
Are you try to eliminate he excess paths segment on the radius paths?
Can you describe how you constructed the art. Did you try to flaten the trasparency first or epand the blend if created with a blend?

27. Re: Shape Builder does not work
Jacob Bugge Jul 1, 2013 12:33 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)Kurt,
Obviously the cob got bored and quintupled the radials (the leftmost one still appears a bit blurry with/without glasses, including some with different fluids), but how will anyone less than heavily drugged be caught if the holes are filled?
Still pondering.

W_J_T Jul 1, 2013 12:58 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)Great you should be good to go then. It's compliant with most modern toasters and vacuum cleaners, how much ram and level 2 cache do you have for each?
Regardless make sure you drink your orange juice and take out the trash. Potato Salad!

Kurt Gold Jul 1, 2013 1:05 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Wade,
that's so wonderful to meet you here – the king of the top participants.
Here are my answers:
- I'm trying to fill the holes.
- I don't want to eliminate anything.
- I didn't construct the artwork. Another artist did it. I don't know if he tried to flaten the trasparency.
Thank you, Wade.

Sounds like Life Paint (as referenced by the Dummy site above) is what you need then:

CarlosCanto Jul 1, 2013 2:40 PM (in response to Kurt Gold)I'm still looking for a way to use my Shape Builder
one way would be like this
- grab your mouse
- move the pointer to the Shape Builder Tool
- press down with your index finger
- release
- move the pointer to your image
- click, click, click your way to stardom.

No way. I've already done that procedure again and again and again.
My Shape Builder shows a preview that indicates that the holes will be filled, but as soon as I click nothing happens.
