Accessing files on a shared network drive
I guess you have already identified your problem.
Illustrator just doesn't like servers.

linziloop Jun 28, 2013 9:28 AM (in response to Monika Gause)We have no other option, these files have to be where they are. We never had problems with CS5, is this a new thing with the CS6 release?!

Jacob Bugge Jun 28, 2013 9:38 AM (in response to linziloop)linziloop,
Is it not an option to save from Illy to own harddisk, then save to server from that using the OS saving?
It is a long standing issue which has hit earlier versions, too. But maybe Illy is getting (even) more ticklish in her old age.

[scott] Jun 28, 2013 10:22 AM (in response to Jacob Bugge)The problem is there are thousands of different server configurations possible. It's merely not feasible for Adobe to test every possible situation. If you've been lucky in the past saving/opening to/from a server it's been just that, luck. There's no guarantee working live from a server will ever work. In most cases, working from a server is an issue rather than a stable workflow.

linziloop Jul 3, 2013 6:42 AM (in response to linziloop)Ok, well, luckily for us I.T could dig through the backup and get us a version of the file from before it became corrupt, and not a lot of work had been done on it since it was last 'ok' so that's saved us.
I don't however think it is pure luck that we have never in 8 years had ANY issues with working from a shared server, it is FAR too much of a coincidence that we have not long upgraded to CS6 and we are starting to see more and more problems like this. I think it can definitely be attributed to the CS6 release in part - there is a problem here, and whilst I understand that they cannot test for every server configuration you would think in time things would get better, not worse

Luke Jennings Jul 3, 2013 6:59 AM (in response to linziloop)It would be a good idea to check for AI updates, I believe CS6 is now 16.0.4
It's also good practice, IMHO, to avoid really long file names and names with unusual characters.

linziloop Jul 3, 2013 7:04 AM (in response to Luke Jennings)Thanks Luke, I've justr checked and the file name is pretty standard and not what I would call massively long (35 characters?!). I will be sure to check for updates too
