1. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
station_two Jul 6, 2013 6:09 PM (in response to Redncuda2)Do you have any illegal characters in the name of anything in the path? Stick to numbers, the letters of the English alphabet and underscores. No apostrophes, asterisks, ampersands, special characters, etc.

4. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Redncuda2 Jul 6, 2013 6:30 PM (in response to station_two)Nothing I can tell. I even just tried opening up another webpage file and tried to save for web. I get the same error. Shouldn't uninstalling and reinstalling PS have helped?

5. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
station_two Jul 6, 2013 6:34 PM (in response to Redncuda2)Not if you have a directory problem or some other disk or system-level issue.
We'll need some Windows expert to chime in…

10. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
station_two Jul 7, 2013 3:27 AM (in response to Redncuda2)Since no one else has chimed in, you may want to try exiting Photoshop, trashing its "Save for Web" preference files. New ones will be created when you relaunch the application:
Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Plugins/Adobe Save For Web CS6/Photoshop
Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Optimized Settings/filename.irs
as per:
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html
Keeping my fingers crossed.

11. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Redncuda2 Jul 7, 2013 9:41 AM (in response to station_two)I hate to be a pest and a dummy but.... I can't seem to find a file "AppData" anywhere. I look under the Adobe/Adobe Photoshop files..... ?
I do a search for it also and nothing pops up.
While I'm at it, one quick question.... Do I have to keep both sets of Photoshop files one set under "Program Files" and one set under Program Files (x86)? Or can I choose which set to keep?
Thanks you again!

That wouldn't be a "file" but a directory, also called a folder.
So you would first look for a directory/folder named "Users", inside which you should find a directory/folder labeled with your own name (as a user). Inside said directory/folder named after you there should be the directory/folder labeled "AppData". If you cannot find the latter, then STOP immediately . It would mean that we are not communicating at all and you're in danger of causing great harm to your machine!

STOP AT ONCE ! I don't remotely understand what you're trying to say there, and that means that there's definitely a serious miscommunication here. I said nothing about "sets of Photoshop files", nor do I understand what you mean by that.
Hopefully a Windows user will chime in to undo whatever confusion I caused and maybe even post a screenshot or two to show you what to do.
Sorry about all of this. I should have shut up right after post #5. My bad!

station_two Jul 7, 2013 10:51 AM (in response to Redncuda2)Stacy,
I've started a new thread asking our resident Windows experts like Noel Carboni, Trevor Dennis, JJMack and others like them, to come to this thread here to rescue you. I'll keep away from that thread now.
I trust this will help!

14. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Noel Carboni Jul 7, 2013 11:02 AM (in response to Redncuda2)You have two sets of installed files, one for 32 bit Photoshop and one for 64 bit Photoshop. You should keep both of them on your computer.
The main 32 bit Photoshop installation area is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop CC
The main 64 bit Photoshop installation area is: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CC (64 Bit)
It's important to note that there are MANY other files in many different places having to do with Photoshop and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
Again, I advise you NOT to try manipulating these files yourself, and you should avoid writing any files into these folders. They most likely have NOTHING to do with the problem you're having, which I suspect may be as simple as corrupted preferences.

15. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Noel Carboni Jul 7, 2013 11:10 AM (in response to Redncuda2)Now, let's address your main issue...
The AppData folder on Windows systems is, unfortunately, normally hidden. Microsoft and Apple both feel that users should not be messing around in the file systems on their computers, and have begun to hide things they really shouldn't be hiding in the name of keeping us from screwing things up. Welcome to the age of dumbed-down computing.
But in any case, if you type or paste the following into your Explorer address bar (note that I said Explorer, not Internet Explorer), will reveal the path under which you'll be needing to look for preference files.
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
Another option is to reset ALL Photoshop preferences to defaults, which involves pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt keys down immediately after cold-starting Photoshop. If you're quick enough - and you have to be really quick on a modern computer - you'll be prompted by Photoshop for permission to delete all current preferences, which will lead to the creation of default preferences.
Note that reinstalling Photoshop does NOT clear preferences.

18. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Redncuda2 Jul 7, 2013 1:39 PM (in response to station_two)OK! I'm really sorry about "file" and "folder"... I do know there is a difference but my mouth didn't communicate it (everything is a "file" to my brain)! You didn't communicate anything wrongly, I promise! I'm reading all of this first before I do anything. Thank you!

19. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Redncuda2 Jul 7, 2013 1:50 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thank you for helping and I'll leave all of the files (and folders!) alone.
I tried the alt-ctrl-shift and right after the computer asked if I wanted to allow PS to make changes to my computer. I accepted. Then shut down and restarted PS hoping that did the trick. Opened my file and tried to save for web and I still get the same error message.
I was able to find the hidden information and looked inside the folders for the Preferences but don't see what I'm looking for. Here is a screenshot of my options:

21. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Noel Carboni Jul 7, 2013 6:37 PM (in response to Redncuda2)I don't have another idea what could be causing that failure, sorry.
Perhaps Adobe will weigh in here.

22. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Chris Cox Jul 7, 2013 6:57 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)I'm at a loss as well.
My only guess is that there is a symlink (alias, shortcut) involved somewhere in the path.

23. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Redncuda2 Jul 7, 2013 7:20 PM (in response to Chris Cox)I don't mind if I have to erase everything associated with PS and start all over if I have to..... I can save everything I need. Also, I still never found the "preferences" ....
I really appreciate everyone taking their time to help me. I'm willing to try whatever I can.... as far as I can tell, the save to web error is the only problem I'm having. Right now, it's the biggest problem and bad timing for me.
Would uninstalling PS CS6 and installing an earlier version help, maybe?
Thanks again!

24. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Noel Carboni Jul 7, 2013 7:25 PM (in response to Chris Cox)Chris I believe is asking whether anything has been done on your system to make the software think something is on one drive when it's actually on another one.

station_two Jul 7, 2013 7:38 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)On the one hand I now feel less bad about not having been able to help since even the top experts are stumped, but on the other hand, now Stacy's problem sounds truly ominous.
Thank you you both, Chris and Noel, for chiming in.

26. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
station_two Jul 7, 2013 7:42 PM (in response to Redncuda2)Stacy, can you do a "Save as"?
I think now is the time to make a complete backup of anything important on your HD, just in case it's a hardware problem like your drive going south.

27. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
station_two Jul 7, 2013 7:44 PM (in response to Chris Cox)Guru Cox, any chance at all that the re-setting of preferences at launch is leaving the corrupted Save For Web preferences untouched?
-
28. Re: save to web directory name is not valid error
Chris Cox Jul 7, 2013 8:54 PM (in response to station_two)Yes, since SFW has it's own preferences file.
I don't recall the exact location on Windows. But it should be "Adobe Save for Web 14.0 Prefs".
(and yes, it is on my TODO list to clean up some of those random prefs files)
