Hi,

I have been out filming all day with my Canon XA20 at 28mbps, 50fps and in MP4 mode.

When I try and import my MP4 video files into Premier Pro CS6 (which is fully upto date) I get this error message -

This file has no audio or video streams.

Now this only happens with MP4 file types. I normally record in AVCHD but this camera has a feature that allows you to switch between MP4 and AVCHD, so today I shot in MP4.

I have no idea why this is happening, everything is upto date and the camcorder works just fine. When I try and import any other file type other the MP4 premier pro opens it fine, but with MP4 I always have this problem.

Don't use "Import" - copy entire contents of memory card to hard drive, then within Premiere, use MEDIA BROWSER. This will interpret the format better than "Import". Hope this does it for you. Has to do with the metadata and other info contained in the folder structure.

Just tried this with the media browser and it did not work.

I have no idea why it is doing it and cannot find a good solution online!

It will not even preview the thumbnail in 'media browser'

Hi John so I got MP4 working by reinstalling quicktime for my windows PC.

However now the MP4 videos are playing back very choppy. I import a AVCHD video and it plays smooth.

Do I need more codecs to make the MP4 play smoothly now?

This happened to another user recently.  I think the 'solution' arrived at was don't use MP4, stick to AVCHD.

Indeed this is not a very good solution!

I mean there must be a reason that mp4 chops about like this?

I agree.  But the reasons could be as simple as PP isn't designed to work with that media.  It is designed to work with AVCHD.

That is interesting. I have been reading up for a while now, it seems as though others don't really have a problem editing mp4 though?

How about this - I re-install my production package and hope it fixes it?

Not all MP4s are alike.  It's possible PP just has an issue with those MP4s, as was the case for the other user with the same issue.

If you have the time for a reinstall, go for it.  That does sometimes fix things.

Thanks Jim I am just reinstalling it now. I will let you know if it fixes things!

If it helps the files I am using feature the avc1 codec, if you know any issues PP has with that codec?

The reinstall has not worked.

I get the same error in CS6, but it plays fine in CC7.

This is not surprising as 1080p/50 was not part of any spec when CS6 was released.  1080i/25 was the norm.

Makes sense about the 1080i/25 the camcorder is pretty new. To fix the

'The file has no audio or video streams'

Message, you install quicktime, the latest version. It should then let you import the file, does it still chop when you successfully import it?

I will not install QuickTime on my machines, so it does not import into CS6.

But it plays buttery smooth in CC7, even without QuickTime.

It playes fine in CS6 and CC...

BTW CS6 has avchd 50p and 60p presets.

Ann - Is that to say you have tried it on cs6 - you're own copy - and it works fine? If yes, what do you think I could be missing? As you can see from the discussion here I have tried a lot to get the file to play smooth.

Jim - I understand, however without you actually loading the file up on cs6 and seeing if it's choppy or not its hard for me to narrow down the solution to my problem. You have been a great help though, if you fancy breaking your quicktime lockdown for me I would be grateful however I do not expect you to at all.

I have 7.7.4. I do have to admit its not as smooth is in CC.

I have no idea. I think its the codec and 50p.

Cs6 also has trouble with GoPro footage which are mp4.

I would stick to the avchd file format.

In the meantime you could convert the file to Cineform.
