When you create an InDesign Package, all of the linked media is pulled into a "Links" folder and the previous location is lost.
Mike Rankin provided a fantastic tip in his Lynda.com video titled Creating Long Documents with InDesign. He recommends that prior to creating the package:
1. You open the package dialog, click Report, and save the file (This file would include the original linked media paths).
2. Create your package and then open up both the package manifest and the previously saved report.
3. Cut and paste the entire Links and images section from your report into your package manifest.
This ensures that you have the original location to these files. Having the full path has proved useful in locating who may hold the original.
This is part of my workflow for all of my projects.
I propose the following features:
- An option to include the original path within the InDesign file.
- An option within the links palet that allows you to restore original paths to all links in a package.
