How do I reset tiling in Elements 11?

I am new to Elements 11 and have been trying to understanding how to work with layers. I loaded a series of images into the editor where they were displayed in a normal tab format in Expert Mode. That is, one image at a time was visible and could be worked on.

Because I wanted to replace a sky I created a layer mask for one of my images and removed the sky. When I tried to copy the new sky layer to the image I was editing I found I could not unless I changed the display to tile state (Window -> Images -> Tile in the editor). This allowed me to copy the sky layer to the original image but I could not find a way to return to the normal tabed format so I could further edit the image. I ended up having to close all of the open tiles until I had only the image to be edited left. Surely there must be a simpler way to return to normal tab display state.

So there really are two questions in this post. First, is there a way to copy layers between images without changing to tile state? And, if not, how does someone return to normal tab state once in tile state? This work was done on a Mac but I don't think there is any real difference between how Elements 11 works on Windows or Mac machines.

Thank you for any help you can supply.
