I've installed the flash player, and it shows up on the control panel, but not on desktop.  how can i open the player?

It's a plugin for your browser, whatver that may be (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera) When you visit a page that has Flash content (like YouTube) THEN you'll see it in action. The Stand Alone Flash Player is ONLY available as an additional install of Flash Professional.
