I use mac osx 10.8.3

Usually update flash player by getting a pop up, then just clicking update, it asks me to quit my browsers, and downloading the new file all within the pop up.

However, this time I was redirected to a webpage and prompted to download and install from a .dmg file.

Is this malware? Or the new typical update flow?

YIKES! So I clearly got tricked into some malware and such then right?

Best way to detect and remove - any guess?

What was the webpage you were directed to?

If it was Adobe, it wasn't malware.

Do you have the URL in your history?

Can you post it here?

Great idea! Thanks. I was able to track down a couple of the urls in my history:

https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/update/osx/

https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_11_for_Mac_OS_X_10.6_-_10.9&os=O...

What do you think? Thanks!

Those are legit. get3.adobe.com is right here on this site. You're not infected.

This is the Adobe (or Akamai) Install Helper application.  It will download the real installer while running, but there are many problems associated with it.  Best use the direct installer that C F McBlob posted.
