Jacob Bugge Aug 12, 2013 3:09 PM (in response to masondm62)Mason,
There is no background in Illy.
You can see it by View>Show Transparency Grid.
If you save/export to a raster format, you may get a background; you do for JPEG, but you can have transparency for other formats, TIFF, PNG, GIF.
Still, if you wish to use it for print, it is better to keep the artwork as vector, without background.

masondm62 Aug 12, 2013 3:21 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)okay I have a image a charactor for my children's book it has a white background, please remember I'm new so I need yes or no answers as I wil not know all this technical language so give it to me in lamens terms. My image is a jpeg, I am trying to overlay the image unto another background but the white behind the image is showing. I'm trying to get rid of the white behind the image so I can place the image on another background. Can I do that in illustrator?

3. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Jacob Bugge Aug 12, 2013 3:34 PM (in response to masondm62)Ah, Mason.
The obvious way to go would be to download a free 30 day trial version of Photoshop, then do it there.

4. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Monika Gause Aug 12, 2013 3:36 PM (in response to masondm62)It's not possible to explain all this to you without you getting additional information on all the technical details. If you don't want to dive tinto details you should consider paying someone to do it for you.
You should maybe read the introductory pages in the manual which tells you about raster and vector files and what is the difference between them and the role of Illustrator in this game. After all you paid for the manual: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/topics.html

6. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Steve Fairbairn Aug 12, 2013 3:39 PM (in response to masondm62)Jpeg does not allow transparency so you should choose a format that does (.psd, .tif, .png).
You might also possibly get away with Multiply as a transparency setting on your placed .jpeg image, depending on what it is you are trying to achieve.

masondm62 Aug 12, 2013 3:42 PM (in response to Monika Gause)I am a degree educator Monika not graphic or web designer, I won't over-burden you with technical details about my profession and I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't do that to me. Now, Jacob has kindly gave me a resolution to my problem and I appreciate that, it was all I was looking for but thank you for replying.

masondm62 Aug 12, 2013 3:48 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)Thanks Jacob. I have looked at the tutorials and I'm not known for being excessively patient I'm a fast learner and If I'm shown and not overloaded with to much info, I catch on very quickly. I'm also a visual learner once I see it done I remember how to do it.

I believe the Magic Eraser Tool will do it nicely, just click somewhere in the/each white area.

13. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Canned Pug Aug 14, 2013 4:15 PM (in response to masondm62)Hi,
I'm not sure how to post, but this is the closest post related to the issues I'm having and that is currently being looked at so forgive if I'm not running protocol. I hope someone (Jason Bugge??) who knows will kindly reply to my question: I'm trying to be able to manipulate the black shapes in my image on a transparent background. (I know PS well, but not Ai)
Going back and forth between PS and Ai, I've managed to get a black object into Ai, so that there's no white background, (my first issue) ,saving a PS file to a tif, then placing into Ai. (It doesn't seem to matter if I embed it or not, I still have an issue).I thought that's all I needed to do to edit the black shape in Ai. But not true. Using the white selection tool or the pen tool, I thought I'd be able to select various parts of the interior of the black shape (there are several black areas or pieces) to manipulate.
As you can see, though this image is black and transparent, I was only able to get what I think are path points, by doing a Live Trace. But the interior areas not only aren't delineated, when I move the whole image, it goes solid. So even though it looks like there are cut out areas with a transparency behind, Illustrator is doing something different than I'm wanting. I'd like to, for instance make the interior blank space larger or simplify it, etc.
So obviously I'm not understanding something, but I don't even know what! Does anyone know what I'm getting at and how to get there???!! (Perhaps I really didn't get only a black shape in Ai, in the first place?)
Thanks anyone!! I've been working days on this and going in circles.

Jacob Bugge Aug 15, 2013 2:51 AM (in response to Canned Pug)CP,
Basically, Illy works with vector artwork, and to her a raster image is just a bunch of pixels that she can do nothing about, as it is to us.

15. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Larry G. Schneider Aug 15, 2013 8:09 AM (in response to Canned Pug)What you copied is a portion of a compound path. Try doing a select all and move it.

16. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Canned Pug Aug 15, 2013 8:32 AM (in response to Jacob Bugge)(Jeez, you talking about me as if im not here).
thats not my complete understanding of it. while i may not know in depth, i understand that vector images arent pixelated and are created by a diff kind of math. i do lack in understanding about paths and that might be the point: but neither of you are addressing the issue, to at least point me to the beginning of a path i need to go down to do my work.
i also already posted that i selected the whole thing and moved it and that the image changed it so im not sure why youre asking me to do that again. if its a compound path, just say so. I guess that clear area within the black really isnt there according to Illustrator. can it be manipulated?
should i bring in a differently formatted image? where should i start to get what i want? do i need to crerate a path in ps first snd import it?
common guys, a clue would help
thx

17. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Larry G. Schneider Aug 15, 2013 8:40 AM (in response to Canned Pug)If you did a Live Trace on the left image and then did a Select All, it should show a path around the inner transparent area of the image. The part you have highlighted in the left image is just part of the compound path required to make the transparent area.

Jacob Bugge Aug 15, 2013 8:45 AM (in response to Canned Pug)CP,
I was trying to answer you based on how I (mis)understood this:
I thought I'd be able to select various parts of the interior of the black shape (there are several black areas or pieces) to manipulate.
As you can see, though this image is black and transparent, I was only able to get what I think are path points, by doing a Live Trace.

23. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Canned Pug Aug 15, 2013 11:34 AM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)Ok, now that I'm on my home computer, I think earlier I was using the white selection tool and clicking on the area and got the first image as LGS suggested.
I thought I got the following by using the shape finder, but maybe I did what you suggested and selected all. I can't remember now.
So I got the following, with the interior areas accessible.
Thanks.. just what I was looking for. It's how and what you select. Right under my nose, as usual.
It also looks like a text wrap. Are they basically the same?

25. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Larry G. Schneider Aug 15, 2013 12:29 PM (in response to Canned Pug)That's what I thought you would get. Don't know what the extra line is; could be a clipping path from the PSD file.

26. Re: Can you make white background invisible in Illustrator?
Canned Pug Aug 15, 2013 12:43 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)I think it has something to do with text wrapping...it looks like a text box in InDesign, which has dialog box but I don't see one in Illustrator..but it must be there in some form
but now on this little snippet I placed and converted to Live Trace. it doesn't have points either no matter how I select it.
