RE:  PHOTOSHOP CC - MENU ITEM EXPLANATIONS

    MyYawrood Community Member

      1)  Where can I find a very basic, very in depth discussion of of all menu items?   There are so many that do not seem to be covered in any of the tutorials - such as "Image" > "Mode" > "8, 16, 32 Bit/Channel".   That's just an example.  Even Fundamental Tutorials do not cover.  Even the Photoshop "manual" I downloaded do not cover.

      2)  In trying to find and view tutorials, one illustrates how to move the entire opening screen around to avoid opening in the Bridge CC (and to keep them side by side if desired), through . .  the menu item "Window" > "Application Frame".  I don't have an Application Frame.

      3)  I was under the impression that if I subscribed to Creative Cloud that I would automatically have everything and it would be automatically downloaded with all of the appropriate updates.  Now I find there's so much I do not have - but worse - no way to know what I am missing.  Could anyone explain this.  I want to spend my valuable time doing my art work, not trying to learn how/when/what/why/IF Creative Cloud downloads, mess-ups, screw-ups, etc.

      Thanks for any help.

I'm afraid your questions are way to generic and broad for anyone to answer comprehensively.

Re 1) 8bit/16bit/32bit refers to general image processing terms for instance and I'm sure there's some Wikipedia article on that somewhere - highter bit depths have better precision, which prevents degeneration of data and image quality plus 32bit is "float" processing, meaning a different kind of underlying math that affects blending modes and provides features such as HDR processing.

Re 2) I'm not clear what you mean with that Bridge thing. The application frame option only exists on Mac.

Re 3) Again, way to generic. You have to explain exactly what you consider "missing". Some options will only be available in specific image modes (yes, that 8bit/16bit/32bit thing just as well as CMYK/RGB/Lab mode), others require specific hardware requirements to be met - none of which we know, because you haven't provided any info. If you have technical issues, you will have provide system specs, error messages, crash logs, screen shots and so on.

            Hi,

Regarding #3, are you using the Creative Cloud Desktop App to manage downloads?  This should give you a comprehensive view of which programs have been downloaded, which need updates, etc. http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-desktop.html

OK on your first paragraph - too generic.  Let me rephrase first question preceeded by info:

Windows 7 Professional - Desktop.  Photoshop CC:

              1)  Where can I find a very basic, very in depth discussion of all menu items?

Such as "File" > "Scripts";     such as "Image" >  "Mode" > various color items; "Window" > "Timeline".

Since the information probably is so very basic. . . but since I'm such a beginner, it would be helpful to find, within Adobe Help, if such a manual exists or is available.  I believe at one time Photoshop had built-in help in which you could browse alphabetically - and you could type in what you were looking for and find it within that Help.  That particular option is no longer availabe.

Since the 8bit/16bit/32bit happens to appear as one of the menu items under "Image" > "Mode" and is part of Photoshop - I assumed there would be an explanation somewhere within Adobe Photoshop.

              2)  How might one - being a beginner in all - know that the Application Frame option only appears in Mac?  I guess thats just one of the pitfalls of being a beginner.  But thanks for advising me on that part.

              3)  I was under the impression that since this forum says Photoshop for Beginners, questions about really basic stuff like options in the menu items, etc would be acceptable.  Maybe I just do not know the best place to go to look for answers.

              But, I appreciate your response.

                Hi,

Also, regarding #1 - this is an in-depth explanation of menu items. http://examples.oreilly.com/9780596522964/appd.pdf It is not fully current to Photoshop CC but should be quite useful as an introduction.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but I'm sorry to say this, based on your questions so far it seems you expect people to explain the whole program to you, which is way beyond the scope of any forum. As I already said, a lot of what you are asking is not specific to Photoshop even and understanding things like the various color modes, image formats etc. would require spending some time with a web search and reading some technical articles. A forum like this can really only serve to answer specific questions when you have hit a wall, point to external resources like tutorials or clarify confusing parts of the help files, but it can't take some basic research off your shoulders. Don't misunderstand me - that's just my personal opinion, after all - but today it's as easy as typing a handful of phrases into a web search, not like almost 20 years back then when we had to figure out things on our own, so it's very easy to find anything your heart desires. If you are not that technically minded and need some human interaction, signing up for a course on a local training facility or an online course might get you started...

Thank you for this information - it is helpful.  There is one question I have about this file - page 5 refers one to what probably is a manual.

                    EXAMPLE:

                    Scripts

Scripts go hand in hand with Automation because they can both handle repetitive

or complex tasks for you. Photoshop’s built-in scripts (like the super handy Image

Processor—see page 238 in Chapter 6) are listed here.

Is there a way to determine what / where this manual / document is?

                    Thank you.

That's probably a reference to the old printed manuals/ PDF. The relevant parts in the online help are here:

                      http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/topics/automation.html

The PDF versions can be downloaded from the help start page, but they are just captured database dumps, so the page numbers won't match with older tutorials citing the printed manuals...

Thanks you so much for this information - it looks like a place to find specific information on a given topic - which is what I need.

Another question, if you will:  You say that the PDF versions can be downloaded from the help start page.  I cannot find the help start page.  I went to Adobe / Photoshop - and in the search box typed Adobe/ Photoshop / Help.  No help page.  Can you give me any additional information.

                        Thank you again

I had at first, decided to ignore the implications of some of your responses. However, after much consideration and reading some other comments and blogs (and even a comment in a popular book) about Adobe customer service, I've decided to respond.  I think your response was condescending and somewhat rude. I do NOT expect anyone to explain the entire Photoshop CC program to me. If you could just look at my opening question - "Where can I find a very basic, very in depth discussion of of all menu items?", I'm asking where I might go to find an explanation of menu items.  You go on to tell me that a lot of what I was asking was not even specific to Photoshop, although every single thing I refered to…..File;  Scripts; Image;  Mode;  Window; Timeline; 8bit/16bit/32bit;  Application Frame…. IS within Photoshop.

Then, to suggest that I “type a handful of phrases into a web search” to do my own research - when its Photoshop’s own menu I’m trying to research….. and when I’m only asking to be directed to find what I need, is insulting.  I do not think it is appropriate customer service.

At the same time, I recognize that I was the first to be rude in calling out Creative Cloud’s mess-ups and screw-ups, etc.  I must apologize for that because it was not you who participated in or had anything to do with failing in information about the missing Bridge “Output” module.  Nevertheless I did start out asking the right question - where to go to find what I wanted - because I too do not believe a forum is the correct place for in depth basic information about a program.  I believe is a strong failure on the part of Adobe is discarding a very useful in depth, item by item, manual.

I have come across this thread on a search and have not actually read the whole thing but just to make sure: Do you know that Mylenium is not a customer service representative or an Adobe employee and this Forum is a user Forum?
