I don't understand!

I have a Windows 7 laptop and when I try to install Adobe Flash player 11 it installs all the way up to 50% and then it tells me to close Internet Explorer to continue. So I close out the windows and click retry and it comes up the same message even though Internet Explorer isn't even running. I don't understand what is going on! Please help if you can!
