Live trace of a photoshop png

    broomeGirl Community Member

Hi I have a map that is set on a transparent bg in photoshop cs6.  If I place it in illustrator and do a live trace I get a bounding square and not the borders of the map. See below

This is the image from photoshop that I have placed in my illustrator brochure and it looks ok as an embed but I would rather it vector like the rest of the brochure.

And this is the bottom of the brochure with the photoshop placed image that I am trying to make vector. Whew!

Apologies but I am new to illustrator, well relatively new and thanks to all who offer their advice

          broomeGirl,

You may save it from Photoshop as a TIFF or PNG with transparency, then place it; you may also use a JPEG or whatever and set the Live Trace to Ignore White.

Or you may have a look in the Layers palette and see. Maybe something needs to be done before you can access the actual image.

But the coastline and all the small islands may raise the question whether a vectorization is called for. The fisherman may also have an opinion.

The first screenshot shows a live image trace object.

To get access to the paths you need to expand it (see Expand button in the Control panel).
