Set the Pixel Aspect Ratio appropriately.

Allynn Wilkinson Oct 1, 2013 8:35 AM (in response to JSS1138)Well... okay. That's a good "after the fact" solution. But how do I prevent Premiere from "interpreting" the stills wrong in the first place?

JSS1138 Oct 1, 2013 8:37 AM (in response to Allynn Wilkinson)Don't know. Sometimes PP just get's it wrong.
What does Photoshop show for the images?

4. Re: Premiere CS6 is stretching my 4:3 Powerpoints...
Allynn Wilkinson Oct 1, 2013 8:55 AM (in response to JSS1138)They are jpegs made with the "save as images" in Powerpoint. Photoshop reports that they are 1440x1080, 72 dpi, RGB color, square-pixels. Nothing terribly special. It would really be great to be able to turn off the interpret footage function for stills. My students are going to have a hard time remembering to re-interpret the PowerPoints (and no one seems to make 16:9 ppts).

JSS1138 Oct 1, 2013 8:58 AM (in response to Allynn Wilkinson)1440x1080, 72 dpi, RGB color, square-pixels.
There's your problem. In the world of HD video, that resolution normally carries a 1.33 PAR, not square, so that's probably why PP thinks it should be stretched.

Michael MTT Oct 1, 2013 10:07 AM (in response to Allynn Wilkinson)What are the settings of the sequence you place the images in? Did you try a sequenc with HDV preset? This should fit your 1440x1080 footage I guess.

7. Re: Premiere CS6 is stretching my 4:3 Powerpoints...
Allynn Wilkinson Oct 1, 2013 10:51 AM (in response to JSS1138)Interesting... but these are still images, not video. I could see why PP would interpret a video file but there has to be some way to tell it to leave my jpegs alone! I'm also next to positive that it didn't behave this way last Spring. Seems like an upgrade must have reset something.

8. Re: Premiere CS6 is stretching my 4:3 Powerpoints...
Allynn Wilkinson Oct 1, 2013 10:58 AM (in response to Michael MTT)Well the issue is that the video is 1920x1080 (16:9). The Powerpoint stills are 1440x1080 (4:3) and I want them to sit on top of the video so that they are pillar boxed. Basically, the workflow has alwyas been: put the HD video on V1, put the PowerPoint slides on V3 and drop a black (or sometimes white) matte unde the slide on V2. And we've been doing this for at least the past year. Now, all of sudden, the jpegs are getting stretched. Jim's original suggestion of selecting them all and changing them to conform to square pixels works. It's just one step that I'd rather not have to rely on my students to do (and I step we didn't have to do before).
Am I mis-remembering something about a preference with different ways to bring in still images? One was crop to fit the sequence (i.e. resizing a 5 megapixel photo down to a smaller size) Another was to bring the image in and scale it to fit the timeline (but *not* to resize the asset) and the third was was to just leave it alone (especially good for "Ken Burns Effect" stuff). I am certain that I saw this in a tutorial or two but I can't find it anywhere!

9. Re: Premiere CS6 is stretching my 4:3 Powerpoints...
Ann Bens Oct 1, 2013 11:10 AM (in response to Allynn Wilkinson)You need to file a bug report.
Premiere is importing the stills wrong.
I just made one 1440x1080 jpeg with square pixels and it comes in stretched (1.33)
Only way to fix this is to interpret the still to the correct PAR.
You do not have to do them one at a time.
Select all stills in the Project Window and right click, modify/interpret and hit OK.

Allynn Wilkinson Oct 1, 2013 11:18 AM (in response to Ann Bens)Thanks,Ann
Unfortunatlely, when I try to submit a bug, I get an "error processing your request"!
I'll try again later
