Cannot "synchronize folder" or "import to this location" in Lightroom 5.2 (64 bit)

When I open Lightroom 5.2 in Win 7 64-bit, (having already checked to make sure it is up to date, and having optimized the catalog) in the Library module, right click on a folder, and select synchronize folder, the normal synchronize folder popup window appears. In this case it identifies 11 photos to be imported.

Clicking synchronize causes the progress bar in the upper left of the screen to show as complete and I get the "task completed" message just above the progress bar. At the same time I get a popup window stating "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64-bit has stopped working", "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly ...". The popup window only offers one option - close window. No photos are imported.

I then tried the import to this location option, but this generates the stopped working popup immediately.

I never had these problems with earlier versions.

So I am stuck - unable to import pictures into Lightroom.

Do I need to uninstall 5.2 and go back to an earlier version? Any help would be appreciated.
